ఈ రోజు ఏ కథ రాయాలి అనుకుంటున్న టైములో భద్ర గారు మంచి సలహా ఇచ్చారు – ఈ బ్లాగ్లో కొన్ని విక్రమార్కుడు-బేతాలుడు కథలు కూడా జేర్చమని.
చిన్నప్పుడు చందమామలో ఎంతో ఇష్టంగా చదివే వాళ్లము. దూరదర్శన్ వారు కూడా ఈ కథలును సీరియల్ గా చూపించేవారు. వారమంతా ఎంతో ఆసక్తిగా ఎదురుచూస్తూ, ఆ టైములో కరెంటు పోకూడదని గట్టిగా ప్రార్థిస్తూ వేచి చూసే వాళ్లము. ఇప్పుడు 100 చానెల్స్, వెయ్యి సీరియల్స్ చూసే జనరేషన్కి ఆ innocent pleasure అస్సలు అర్ధం కాకపోవచ్చు.
కానీ ఈ కథలు ఉత్తి వినోదం కోసమే రాసినవి కాదు. ఈ చిన్న కథలలో పెద్ద నీతులు దాగి వుంటాయి. భారతీయ సంస్కృతిలో పురాణ కథలలో వినోదంతో పాటు విద్యా, విజ్ఞానం కూడా వెదజల్లడం మామూలు విషయం. అందుకే “వెన్నతో పెట్టిన విద్య” అనే పదానికి అంత లోతైన అంతరార్ధం వుంది. నిన్న చూసిన సినిమా ఇవాళ గుర్తు వుండదు. కానీ ఈ కథలు? ఎన్నో యుగాలుగా గుర్తుండి పోయినవి.
విక్రం-బేతాళ్ కధలు దాదాపు 2500 సమత్సరాల క్రిందట మహాకవి సోమదేవ్ భట్ట సంస్కృతంలో వ్రాసిని “బేతాల్ పచ్చీసి” పై ఆధారించబడినవి. పచ్చీసీ అన్న పేరుబట్టి మొదటిలో ఇవి 25 కథల ద్వారా తెలియచేసిన నీతులని నమ్ముతారు. చందమామ magazine వల్ల popular culture లో చోటు చేసుకుని, చాలా భాషలలోకి అనువదించబడ్డాయి. విక్రమార్కుడు, బేతాళుడు ముఖ్య పాత్రల ఆధారంగా కొన్ని వందల కథలు రాసారు.
ఉజ్జయిని మహారాజు విక్రమార్కుడు తెలివైన వాడని, అనుభవగ్నుడని, అసమాన విజ్ఞాన విచక్షణ గల వాడని పేరు చెందాడు. ఆయన రాజనీతి, యుక్తి, సమస్యస్ఫూర్తి మూలంగా ఆ యుగంలో బాగా ప్రఖ్యాతి చందేరు.
విక్రమార్కుడికి రోజు ఒక యాచకుడు ఒక పండు పంపించేవాడట. ఆ పండు కొస్తే, అందులో రోజూ ఒక మణి వుండేది. ఈ విషయం ఆశ్చర్యజనకంగా అనిపించి రాజుగారు ఆ యాచకుడిని కలవాలనుకున్నారు. యాచకుడు నెలలో 14వ రోజున అర్ధరాత్రి ఒక స్మశానంలో వంటరిగా వస్తే కలుస్తానని కబురు పంపించాడు.
ఈ వింత ఏంటో తనే తెలుసుకోవాలని విక్రమార్కుడు యాచకుడిని కలిసాడు.
ఆ యాచకుడు ఒక చెట్టుమీద వేళ్ళాడుతున్న ఒక శవాన్ని తీసుకుని రమ్మని, ఇలా చేస్తే యాచకుడికి అపారమైన క్షుద్ర శక్తి వస్తుందని యాచించాడు. వెతికి తీసుకుని వస్తానని మాట ఇచ్చాడు విక్రమార్కుడు.
అలా చెట్టుమీంచి దింపిన శవంలో బేతాళుడు వున్నాడు. బేతాళుడు విక్రమార్కుడితో ప్రయాణం చేయడానికి ఒప్పుకుంటాడు కాని, ఒక్క నిబంధన పెడతాడు. దారిలో విక్రమార్కుడు మాట్లాడ కూడదు. దీనికి విక్రమార్కుడు ఒప్పుకుంటాడు.
ఇలా తీసుకుని వెళ్తుంటే బేతాళుడు చిన్న కథ చెప్పి, అందులో ఒక క్లిష్టమైన ప్రశ్న అడుగుతాడు. దానికి జవాబు తెలిసినా నోరు మెదలకపోతే విక్రమార్కుడి తల బద్దలైపోతుందని హెచ్చరిస్తాడు.

విక్రమార్కుడు జవాబు చెప్తే బేతాళుడు మౌనభంగం కలిగినందుకు శిక్షగా మళ్ళీ తన చెట్టు మీదకి యెగిరి వెళ్లి పోతాడు. అలాగని చెప్పకపోతే తల నరికేస్తాడు.
ఇలాంటి పరిస్థితిలో ప్రతి సారి విక్రమార్కుడు జవాబు చెప్తాడు, బేతాళుడు శవంతో పాటు యెగిరి పోతాడు.
మహాకవి సోమదేవ్ భట్ట రాసిన “బేతాళ పచ్చీసి”లో చివరికి 25వ కథ అంతంలో విక్రమార్కుడు జవాబు చెప్పకుండా ప్రయాణం పూర్తీ చేసి ఆ యాచకుడి దగ్గిరకి బేతాళ్ ని చేర్చుతాడు.
కానీ చందమామ మార్చి 2013 లో చివరిసారి పబ్లిష్ అయ్యేంతవరకూ విక్రమార్కుడిని బేతాళుడి వెంట పరిగేట్టిస్తూనే వుంది!
“పట్టువదలని విక్రమార్కుడు” అన్న పదంతో మొదల్లయ్యే ఈ కథలు, చిన్నప్పుడు నేనెంత సరదాగా చదివేదాన్నో, మీరు అంత ఇష్టంగానూ చదువుతారని, మళ్ళీ ఆ జ్ఞాపకాలను గుర్తు తెచ్చుకుని మీ పిల్లలకు చదివి వినిపిస్తారని ఆశిస్తున్నాను.

“Why not add some stories of Vikram and Betal?”
And that is how we begin!
🌙 Childhood Memories
When we were children, we loved reading these stories in Chandamama
magazine.
They were also shown as a television serial on Doordarshan.
We used to wait the whole week to watch it. At that time, we
would even pray that the electricity would not go off during the show!
Today’s children have hundreds of TV channels and thousands
of shows. They may not understand that simple, innocent happiness.

But these are not just entertaining stories.
Inside these small stories are great life lessons.
In Indian culture, stories from ancient times always teach
wisdom along with fun. A movie we watch today may be forgotten tomorrow. But
these stories? They have been remembered for thousands of years!
📜 Where Did These Stories
Come From?
The Vikram–Betal stories are based on a very old Sanskrit
book called Baital Pachisi, written about 2500 years ago by Somadeva.
“Pachisi” means twenty-five. So originally, there were 25
stories, each teaching an important moral lesson.
Later, because of Chandamama magazine, these stories
became very popular and were translated into many languages. Over time,
hundreds of stories were written based on the main characters — Vikram and
Betal.
👑 Who Was Vikram?
King Vikram (Vikramarka) was the brave and wise king of Ujjain.
He was known for:
- Intelligence
- Courage
- Smart
decision-making
- Strong
sense of justice
People admired him for his wisdom and bravery.

👻 The Strange Beginning
Every day, a beggar would send a fruit to King Vikram.
When the fruit was cut open, there was a precious gem
inside!
Surprised, the king decided to meet the beggar.
The beggar sent a message:
“Come alone to the cremation ground at midnight on the 14th day of the month.”
Curious and fearless, Vikram went.
The beggar asked him to bring a dead body hanging from a
tree in the cremation ground. He said it would give him great magical powers.
Vikram agreed.

🧟 The Clever Betal
When Vikram took down the body, he discovered that a spirit
named Betal was inside it.
Betal agreed to go with Vikram — but with one condition:
“On the way, you must not speak.”
Vikram agreed.
But as they traveled, Betal began telling a story. At the
end of the story, he would ask a difficult question.
Then he would warn:
“If you know the answer and still remain silent, your head
will break into pieces!”
So Vikram had a problem:
- If he
answered, Betal would escape and fly back to the tree.
- If he
did not answer, his head would burst!
Every time, Vikram answered correctly. And every time, Betal
flew back to the tree. Poor Vikram had to go back again and again to bring him
down!
🏁 The Final Story
In the original Baital Pachisi, at the end of the
25th story, Vikram finally stays silent and successfully completes the task.
But in Chandamama magazine, until its last issue in
March 2013, Betal kept running away — and Vikram kept chasing him!
