విజయనగర సామ్రాజ్యంలో వికటకవిగా ప్రసిద్ధిచెందిన తెనాలి రామలింగని గూర్చి విననివారు ఉండరు. తెలివితేటలు, హాస్యము-అతనిసొత్తు!
ఆ రాజ్యంలోని ఒక ఊరులో ఒకముసలమ్మ నివసిస్తూండేది. ఒకరోజున ముగ్గురు దొంగలు ఆమెవద్దకు వచ్చి “అవ్వా! మేము యాత్రీకులము. చాలాదూరం ప్రయాణం చేయుటచే బాగా అలసిపోయి ఉన్నాము. దయతో మాకొక గదిని అద్దెకు ఇస్తే యిక్కడ విశ్రాంతి తీసుకొంటూ కొన్నాళ్ళు ఉంటాము” అన్నారు.
ఆమె అంగీకారంతో వారాయింటిలో నివసించసాగారు. ఒకరోజున వాళ్ళు బంగారునాణేలతోనున్న కుండనొకటి తెచ్చియిచ్చి దాన్ని భద్రంగా చూడవలసినదని ఆమెకు చెప్పారు. ఆమెకు అనుమానం వచ్చి “ఇంత సొమ్ము మీకెక్కడిదీ? మీరు దొంగలా?” అని అడిగింది.
“కాదు, మేము యాత్రీకులము. ప్రతీ రాత్రీ మేము దేవాలయాలవద్ద అనేక భక్తిగీతాలు పాడుతూ, జాగరణలు చేసేవారికి తోడుగా ఉంటాము.
వాళ్ళు మాకు కానుకగా యీ బంగారు నాణేలను ఇస్తుంటారు. మేము నల్గురమూ కలిసి వచ్చి అడిగినప్పుడు మాత్రమే యీ కుండను మాకివ్వాలి! అట్లా చేస్తానని నీవు మాకు ప్రమాణం చేసి చెప్పు” అన్నారు. అందులకు ఆమె అంగీకరించింది.
ఒకరోజున వాళ్ళు యింటికి తిరిగివస్తూండగా దారిలో ఏవో తినుబండారాలు, పళ్ళూ కన్పించాయి. ఆ రోజు వాళ్ళవద్ద పైకమేమీలేదు. మరి అవి ఎట్లా కొనుక్కోవాలి. అవ్వయిల్లు దగ్గరలోనే ఉంది. అందుచేత వారిలో ఒకణ్ణి పోయి కుండనుతీసుకు రమ్మని చెప్పారు. వెళ్ళినవాడు కుండనిమ్మని అడిగితే ఆ అవ్వగట్టిగా “కుండను యితనికి యివ్వవచ్చునా?” అని కేకవేసింది.
ఆమెకు సమాధానంగా మిగతాముగ్గురూ “ఆ! ఇవ్వవచ్చు” అన్నారు. వెంటనే ఆమె. వచ్చినవానికి కుండనిచ్చింది. ఆ వచ్చిన వాడు 'దురాశాపరుడు. ఆ నాణేలకుండతో ఎక్కిడికో పారిపోయాడు.
ఎంతసేపటకీ అతడు రాలేదని మిగతా ముగ్గురూ అవ్వవద్దకు వెళ్ళి “అవ్వా!కుండ ఏది?” అని అడిగారు. “వచ్చిన వాడికి కుండను యివ్వవచ్చునని అరచి చెప్పారుకదా! అందుచేత కుండను వానికి యిచ్చాను” అంది.
దానికి ఆ ముగ్గురుదొంగలూ నానారభసా చేయసాగారు. “ముసలమ్మ దొంగది. మా సొమ్మంతా దొంగిలించింది” అని అరవసాగారు. ఆ గొడవకి చుట్టుప్రక్కలవారు అనేకమంది పోగయ్యారు. ఎవరూ ఏమీ చెప్పలేకపోతున్నారు.
అదే సమయంలో రామలింగడు ఆ దారిగుండాపోతూ వీరిగోల విన్నాడు. ఆ సమయంలోనే ప్రాతఃకాల వ్యాయామం చేస్తూ వెళ్తున్న మహారాజుకూడా అక్కడకు రావడం సంభవించింది. ఆయనకు రామలింగడు జరిగినదంతా వివరించి “అవ్వను దూషించడం మంచిపనికాదు. అవ్వ నిజాయితీపరురాలు. మోసకారికాదు!” అన్నాడు.
“ఐతే, ఆమెనిర్జోషి యని నీవే నిరూపించి చూపించు” అని రామలింగని రాజుగారు ఆజ్ఞాపించారు. రామలింగడు ఆ ముగ్గుర్నీ ఒక ప్రక్కకుపిల్చి, జరిగినదంతా చెప్పండి అని అడిగాడు.
అంతా విన్న రామలింగడు “ఈ అవ్వ దోషికాదు. అ అవ్వ అబద్ధమాడుటలేదు. మీరు నలుగురు ఉన్నప్పుడు మాత్రమే ఆమెను కుండనిమ్మని. చెప్పారుకదా? ఇప్పుడు మీరు ముగ్గురే ఉన్నారు!
మీకు ఈమె కుండనెట్లాయిస్తుంది?” అని అడిగాడు. ఏం జవాబుచెప్పాలో వాళ్ళకి తోచలేదు. వాళ్ళని నిలదీసిన మీదట, తాముకూడా దొంగలమేనని వాళ్ళు ఒప్పుకున్నారు.
రామలింగని తెలివికి రాజుగారు సంతోషించి న్యాయాధికారిగా నియమించారు. ముగ్గురు దొంగల్నీ బంధించి చెరసాలలో బెట్టారు.

Tenali Ramalinga’s Cleverness
In the kingdom of Vijayanagar, there lived a very clever and
funny man named Tenali Ramalinga. Everyone admired his wit and wisdom.
In a village of the kingdom, there lived an old lady. One
day, three thieves came to her and said,
“Dear lady, we are travelers. We have been walking a long
distance and are very tired. Please let us stay in your house for a short
while.”
The kind old lady agreed, and they stayed in her home.
One day, the thieves brought a pot full of gold coins
and asked her to keep it safe. The old lady became suspicious. “Where did you
get all this money? Are you thieves?” she asked.
The thieves replied, “No! We are travelers. Every night we
sing devotional songs at temples, and the devotees give us gold as a gift. We
only let one of us take the pot when we all agree. You must promise to give it
to the one who comes with our permission.”
The old lady agreed to their request.

The Trick
One day, the thieves found some food and fruits on the way
home but had no money. So, they decided to send one thief to take the
pot from the old lady.
When he asked for the pot, the old lady loudly asked,
“Should I give the pot to you?”
The other three thieves quickly shouted, “Yes! You can give
it to him!”
The old lady gave the pot to him—but the thief ran away
with it!
The three thieves returned and angrily asked the old lady,
“Where is the pot?”
The old lady calmly said, “I gave it to the one who came
with your permission. That’s all!”
The three thieves were furious. “She stole all our money!”
they shouted, creating a huge scene.

Tenali Rama to the Rescue
At that moment, Tenali Ramalinga was passing by and
heard the commotion. He explained to the king, who was nearby,
“Dear king, the old lady is honest. She didn’t lie or steal
anything. The thieves are trying to blame her unfairly.”
The king ordered Tenali Rama to prove her innocence.
Tenali Rama called the three thieves and asked them to tell
the story.
After listening carefully, he asked, “Didn’t you say that
she should give the pot only when all four of you were present? Now only three
of you are here. Will she still give it to you?”
The thieves couldn’t answer. Tenali Rama pointed out that
the old lady was innocent and tricked the thieves into admitting their crime.
The king was very happy with Tenali Rama’s cleverness. He
made him the chief justice, and the three thieves were arrested and
punished.
Moral of the Story
Cheating and dishonesty never succeed. Cleverness and
honesty always win.
