గుహుడు రాముడికి తెలియకుండా ఆయనను గమనించటానికి చారులను పంపించాడు. వారు రాముడు చిత్రకూటాన్ని చేరుకున్నాడన్న వార్త పంపినపుడు సుమంత్రుడు తన రథం ఎక్కి అయోధ్యకు తిరిగి వెళ్ళటానికి బాధాకరమైన ప్రయాణం ప్రారంభించాడు.
రెండు రోజుల తర్వాత సాయంకాలానికి సుమంత్రుడు అయోధ్యకు చేరుకొని నగరం దాదాపు నిర్మానుష్యంగా వుండటం గమనించాడు.(మనుష్యులు ఉన్న లేనట్టి స్తితి లో ఉంది అని భావన)
కథా వివరణ:
1. సుమంత్రుని రాక - అయోధ్య నిశ్శబ్దం:
ఆ ఖాళీ రథాన్ని చూడగానే అయోధ్య ప్రజలు హాహాకారాలు చేశారు.. దశరథుడు "రామా.. రామా.." అని విలపిస్తూ స్పృహతప్పి పడిపోయాడు. స్పృహ వచ్చాక, రాముడు పంపిన సందేశాన్ని సుమంత్రుడు చెప్పాడు. "ధర్మానికి కట్టుబడి నేను సంతోషంగానే అడవికి వెళ్తున్నానని మా తండ్రిగారికి చెప్పండి" అని రాముడు పంపిన వార్త విని దశరథుడి గుండె ముక్కలైంది.(ఇక్కడ రాముడు తండ్రికి,తల్లికి, సుమంత్రుడికి వారి వారి కర్తవ్యాలు ఆచరించటమే ముఖ్య ధర్మం అని సందేశం ఇస్తాడు)
2. ఒక పాపానికి ప్రాయశ్చిత్తం - మునికుమారుని కథ:
ఆ సందేశం విన్న తర్వాత అంతఃపురం లో అప్పటి వరకు తిరిగి వస్తాడేమో అనే ఆశ ఉండేది కానీ.ఇక 14 ఏళ్ల వరకు రాముడు రాడు అని అందరికీ అర్దం అయింది, కౌసల్యా దేవి దానికి కారణం మీరే అని దశరధుని తూర్పార బట్టింది.ఆ మాటలకు దశరధుడు మళ్ళీ మూర్ఛ బోయాడు.వెంటనే కౌసల్య దేవి మెత్తబడి అయ్యో బాధలో అలా అని ఉండకూడదే అనుకుంటుంది.ఒక అర్ధరాత్రి సమయ కి దశరథుడు స్పృహ లోకి వస్తాడు... అప్పుడు మరణం తనను సమీపిస్తోందని దశరథుడికి అర్థమైంది. కౌసల్యా దేవి సాంత్వన పరచే ప్రయత్నం చేసింది ఆ క్షణంలో దశరథుడు తన ఈ దుస్థితికి కారణమైన ఒక గతాన్ని (కర్మ ఫలాన్ని) కౌసల్యకు ఇలా వివరించాడు:
కౌసల్యా తాను చేసే పనియొక్క మంచి లేదా చెడు ప్రతిక్రియ గురించి ఆలోచించనివాడు నిశ్చయంగా గొప్ప మూర్ఖుడు. ముళ్ళకంపలను పెంచటంకోసం మామిడిచెట్లను నరికేవాడు. పంట పండవలసిన సమయంలో నిస్సంశయంగా పశ్చాత్తాపపడుతాడు. రాముణ్ణి అడవులకు బహిష్కరించటంలో నేను సరిగా ఈ ఉదాహరణనే అనుసరించాను.
"కౌసల్యా! చాలా కాలం కిందట నేను యవ్వనంలో ఉన్నప్పుడు నాకు 'శబ్దవేధి' (చీకటిలో కేవలం శబ్దాన్ని బట్టి బాణం వేసే) విద్య తెలుసు. యువకుడి గా ఉన్నప్పుడు ఒక అర్ధరాత్రి సరయూ నది తీరంలో వేటకు వెళ్లాను. నీళ్లలో బుడబుడమనే శబ్దం వినిపించింది. ఏదో ఏనుగు నీళ్లు తాగుతోందని భ్రమపడి,ఆ శబ్దం వచ్చే వైపు చీకటిలోకి బాణం వదిలాను.అయితే ఆ దిశగా నా బాణాన్ని విడిచిన మీదట బిగ్గరగా ఒక ఆర్తనాదం వినవచ్చింది. 'నేను అమాయకుడినైన ఋషినైనప్పటికీ నన్ను క్రూరంగా తన బాణంతో ఛేదించినదెవరు? అన్న మానవ స్వరం వినిపించింది. నేను అటు వైపు పరుగులు తీసి వెళ్ళి చూస్తే...
ఆ బాణం నీళ్లు ముంచుతున్న ఒక మునికుమారుడికి (శ్రవణ కుమారుడు) తగిలింది. ఆ బాలుడు తన అంధులైన, వృద్ధ తల్లిదండ్రుల దాహం తీర్చడానికి నీళ్ల కోసం వచ్చాడు."
3. అంధ దంపతుల శాపం:
ఆ బాలుడు ప్రాణాలు విడుస్తూ, తన తల్లిదండ్రులకు నీళ్లు ఇవ్వమని నన్ను కోరాడు. నేను భయంతో వణుకుతూ ఆ నీళ్లు తీసుకువెళ్లి ఆ అంధ దంపతులకు ఇచ్చి, జరిగిన ఘోరాన్ని చెప్పాను. ఆ వృద్ధ దంపతులు పుత్రశోకంతో గుండె పగిలి విలపిస్తూ, "మేము ఎలాగైతే పుత్రశోకంతో ప్రాణాలు వదులుతున్నామో, నీవు కూడా వృద్ధాప్యంలో పుత్రశోకంతోనే (కొడుకు కోసం ఏడుస్తూ) ప్రాణాలు విడుస్తావు" అని శపించి, అదే చితిలో ప్రాణాలు విడిచారు.

4. నిద్రలోనే ప్రాణత్యాగం:
ప్రియమైన కౌసల్యా! నా ఘోరమైన నేరానికి ఈనాడు ఫలితం అనుభవిస్తున్నాను. నేను భగ్న హృదయంతో మరణిస్తున్నాను. తైలం ఇంకిపోయిన దీపంయొక్క జ్వాలమాదిరిగా నా ఇంద్రియాల పటుత్వం ఉడిగిపోవటం నాకు తెలుస్తున్నది. నా మృత్యువు ఆసన్నమైందని నాకు తెలుసు. ఓ రాణీ! నేనిప్పటికే దుఃఖంతో అంధుడినైనాను. దయచేసి నీవు నన్ను స్పర్శిస్తే నీవిక్కడే వున్నావన్న ధైర్యం పొందుతాను."
అలా దశరథమహారాజు రాముని స్మృతిలోనే పూర్తిగా మునిగిపోయి, రామ విరహంతో శోకిస్తూనే ఉన్నాడు. సగం రాత్రి గడచిన మీదట మహారాజు తన పార్థివదేహాన్ని వదిలాడు.
5. అయోధ్య నాధుడు లేని అనాధ:
మరుసటి రోజు ఉదయం వందిమాగధులు రాజును మేల్కొల్పడానికి సుప్రభాతం పాడారు. కానీ రాజు లేవలేదు.పరిచారికలు ఆయన గదిలోనికి వచ్చినపుడు ఆయన దేహంలో జీవకళ లేకపోవటం గమనించారు. ఆ స్త్రీలు భీతావహులై కేకలు పెట్టడంతో కౌసల్య, సుమిత్రలు ఉలికిపాటుతో మేలుకొన్నారు. తమ మహారాజు మరణించాడని గ్రహించిన ఇద్దరు రాణులు వేదనతో నేలపై కూలారు. ఈ కలకలం విన్న కైకేయి కూడా వచ్చింది. మహారాజు మరణించినట్లు అర్ధంచేసుకోగానే ఆమె కూడా దీనంగా రోదించసాగింది.
మృతుడైన భర్త యొక్క శిరస్సును ముద్దాడుతూ కౌసల్య కైకేయి నుద్దేశించి "నేను మహారాజు చితిపైకి ఎక్కి ఆయన వెళ్ళినచోట ఆయనతో కలిసి నివసిస్తాను. నీలాంటి పాపిష్టి దౌర్భాగ్యురాలు మాత్రమే భర్తలేకున్నా హాయిగా జీవించగలుగుతుంది" అంటూ పరుషంగా పలికింది.
మంత్రులు వచ్చి తమకు చేతనైనంత మేరకు కౌసల్యను ఓదార్చటానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తూ ఆమెను అక్కడ నుంచి దూరంగా తీసుకుపోయారు. పుత్రుని సమక్షంలో మాత్రమే అంతిమ సంస్కారం జరుపవలసి వుంది, భరత శత్రుఘ్నులు మేనమామ ఇంట్లో ఉన్నందున, వశిష్ఠ మహర్షి ఆజ్ఞ మేరకు దశరథుని దేహాన్ని తైల ద్రోణిలో (నూనె తొట్టిలో) భద్రపరిచి, భరతుని తీసుకురావడానికి అత్యవసరంగా దూతలను పంపారు.
తమ పాలకుణ్ణి పోగొట్టుకున్న అయోధ్యా పురజనులు విచారమగ్నులైనారు.ప్రజానీకం వీధుల్లో గుమికూడి తమ దుఃఖాన్ని వెళ్ళగ్రక్కటం కోసం కైకేయిని బహిరంగంగా నిందించసాగారు.

After sending Lord Rama to the forest, Sumanta begins his
return journey to Ayodhya. It’s not just a physical journey… it feels heavy,
almost unbearable. When he finally reaches the city, something feels off. The
streets are silent—too silent. Ayodhya, once full of life, now feels empty…
like it’s holding its breath.
When people see the empty chariot, panic spreads. Cries echo
everywhere. King Dasharatha, already broken, keeps calling out “Rama… Rama…”
and collapses.

The Story Behind the Curse…
Late at night, sensing that his end is near, Dasharatha
