గురుపత్ని పేరిందేవి గారొక ఇద్దరు శిష్యులను పిలిచి, అప్పటికి రెండ్రోజులుగా మన ఇంట్లో పాడి అవు కనిపించడం లేదు వెతకమని సెలవిచ్చారు. రానున్న వర్షాకాలాన్ని దృష్టిలో ఉంచుకొని. దానంలో దొరకని సరుకులు కొనుక్కొని రావడానికో ముగ్గురు; తగినంత వంట చెరకు సమకూర్చడానికో ముగ్గురు శిష్యులు చొప్పున నలుదిశలకూ బయల్దేరి వెళ్ళిపోయిరు.
గుర్రం బేరం చేయడానికి వెళ్ళిన శిష్యులూ, ఆవుని వెదక బోయిన శిష్యులూ కలుసుకొని “అవు ఎలాగూ కనిపించలేదు కనుక పనిలో పని ఓ ఆవును కూడా కొనేద్దా”మంటూ అశ్వనిపుణ శిష్యులతో కలిసి బైలుదేరారు.
అలా వెళ్ళిన నలుగురు శిష్యులకూ ఓచోట ,ఒక కోనేరు, దానిపక్కనే పచ్చని పొలం, పొలంలో కొన్ని గుర్రాలు మేయడం కనిపించాయి. వాటి పక్కనే కొన్ని బూడిద గుమ్మడికాయలు తెల్లగా నేలను కాసి ఉన్నాయి. మన ప్రబుద్ధులు ఆ గుమ్మడి కాయలనెన్నడూ చూడలేదు.
వారికి తెలిసిందల్లా తియ్య గుమ్మడి మాత్రమే! పైగా ఈ తెల్లని బూడిద గుమ్మడి గుర్రాల పక్కన చూసేసరికి, అవి గుర్రం గుడ్లు అయి ఉంటాయని వారికివారే నిర్ధారించేసుకున్నారు.
“గుర్రం ఖరీదు చాలా ఎక్కువగా ఉంటుంది కదా! అందువల్ల గుర్రం గుడ్డుకొని పిల్లల్ని చేయిస్తే చౌకగా గిట్టుబాటు అవుతుంది”... అనుకొని, తిరుగుముఖం పట్టి గురువుగారి దగ్గరికెళ్ళారు.
“పోయిన ఆవు ఎక్కడా కనిపించలేదు” అని గురువమ్ము గారికి తెలియజేసి, గురువుగారితో “గురువర్యా! ఒకచోట కొన్ని గుర్రాల్నిగుర్రం గుడ్లని మాత్రం చూశాం. ఈ కాలాన్ని బట్టి చూస్తే గుర్రం ఖరీదు అధికంగా ఉండేలా తోస్తోంది.
కనుక, గుర్రం గుడ్డు కొని పిల్లల్ని చేయిస్తే...” అని ఓ శిష్యుడు అంటుండగానే “ఓహో! భేష్! చాలా మంచి ఆలోచన, కాని గుడ్డు పొదగాలి కదా!” అంటూ సందేహాన్ని వెలిబుచ్చారు పరమానందయ్య,
“దానికేముంది? రోజుకొకరు చొప్పున గుడ్ల మీద వెచ్చగా కూర్చొని పొదిగేస్తే పోలా?” అనేసి సమస్య తేలిగ్గా తేల్చేశారు. గురువు గారికి తన శిష్యుల అసమాన ప్రతిభా విశేషాల మీద అపారమైన నమ్మకం , కదా! “సరే కానివ్వండి” అంటూ గుర్రంగుడ్లు ఖరీదు చేయడం కోసం మన అశ్వ నిపుణులకు కొంత ధనం ఇచ్చి పంపించారు.

దారిలో గుర్రం ఎక్కడం వల్ల గురువు గారి హుందాతనం ఎలా పెరిగేదీ ముచ్చటించుకుంటూ, ఇంతకు ముందు తాము గుర్రాలను ఎక్కడ చూసిందీ వెతుక్కుంటూ అవి నిలిచి ఉన్న పొలం దగ్గర కొచ్చారు. బూడిద గుమ్మడి కాయలూ అక్కడే అలానే ఉన్నాయి.
అక్కడికి దగ్గరలో ఉన్న ఒక రైతును చూసి “ఈ గుర్రం గుడ్డు ఖరీదుకు ఇస్తారా? ఇస్తే ఎంత చెప్తున్నారు?” అని అడిగాడొక శిష్యుడు.
మొదట వేళాకోళంగా అంటూన్నారేమో అనుకున్న ఆ రైతుకు ఇంకో శిష్యుడు కూడా ఇదే ప్రశ్న అడిగి “ఊరకే నాన్చుడు వ్యవహారాలు మాకు నచ్చవు. ఠకాఠక్! బేరం తేలిపోయే ఖరీదు చెప్పు!” అంటూ రెట్టించే సరికి, వీళ్ళెవరో వెర్రి బాపనయ్యల్లా ఉన్నారని గమనించేసిన ఆ రైతు బిగుసుక్కూర్చున్నాడు- బేరం చెప్పక.
“అయ్యవార్లూ! ఇవి,మహారాజుల గుర్రాలు, మేలుజాతి అశ్వాలు. వీటి గుడ్లు సాధారణంగా అందరికీ దొరికేవి కావు. మీరెంతో అక్కరలో ఉండి అడిగారు గనుక మీకు అమ్ముదామని నిర్ణయించుకున్నాను. ఎన్ని గుడ్లు కావాలి?” అన్నాడు.
“ఎన్నో అక్కర్లేదు, ఒక్కటి చాలు!” అన్నాడో శిష్యుడు.

“ఓహో! ఈ మాత్రానికేనా? గుడ్డు ఖరీదు నలభై వరహాలు అన్నాడు రైతు.
ఏదైనా కొనేటప్పుడు బేరంచేసి కొనాలని, గతంలో గురువుగారొక సారి అనడంతో, “చాలా ఎక్కువ చెబుతున్నావయ్యా!” అన్నాడు ఆ సంగతి గుర్తొచ్చిన శిష్యుడు.
“నేను ముందే చెప్పాను, ఇది మేలుజాతి గుర్రం గుడ్లని, ఆపైన మీ ఇష్టం. అంతగా మీరు అడుగుతున్నారనీ-పైగా బాపనయ్యలు అడిగితే లేదనకూడదనీ అమ్ముదామనుకున్నాను. సర్రెండి! ఓ ఐదు వరహాలు తగ్గించివ్వండి” అన్నాడు ఎంతో ఉదారంగా ఆ రైతు.
అదే మహద్భాగ్యం లనుకొని లెక్కించి 35 వరహాలూ ఆ రైతు చేతిలో పోసి, అతడిచ్చిన గుర్రం గుడ్డును నెత్తిపై పెట్టుకుని వంతుల వారీగా మోసుకు వస్తున్నారా శిష్యులు.
గుడ్డు నెత్తిపై పెట్టుకున్న వాని కాలికి రాయి తగిలేసరికి, అతడు తూలి పడబోయి నిలదోక్కు కున్నాడు గాని నెత్తిపైనున్న బూడిద గుమ్మడి (వారి లెక్క ప్రకారం “గుర్రం గుడ్డు) దఖేల్న పడి పగిలింది. చెక్కలైన బూడిద గుమ్మడి పొదల్లోకి వెళ్ళి “పడేసరికి ఆ పొదల్లో తల దాచుకుంటూన్న ఓ చెవుల పిల్లి ఛెంగున గెంతుతూ పరుగుటెత్తింది.
“ఓసి! దీందుంపతెగ! ఇది పగిలీ, పగలగానే పిల్ల బైటికొచ్చిందే! చూడు! ఎలా పరిగెత్తు తున్నదో! ఇదేగాని పెద్దదైతే రెక్కల గుర్రంలా ఆకాశంలో దూసుకు పోయినా ఆశ్చర్యపోనక్కర్లేదు” అనుకుంటూ తలోవైపు కాపు కాసి దాన్ని పట్టుకోజూశారు. అది వారిని ముప్పుతిప్పలు పెట్టి బాగా అలుపొచ్చేక తప్పించుకు పారిపోయింది.
ఇక, గుర్రప్పిల్ల చేజారిపోయిందని రూఢి చేసుకున్నాక, బాగా డస్సిపోయిన శిష్యులు చెట్టుకింద మేను వాల్చారు. గుర్రం గురించిన సంగతులు తాము విన్నవీ, కన్నవీ ముచ్చటించుకుంటూ.
ఆ దారిన పోతున్న ఓ బాటసారి వీళ్ళ మాటలు విని, సంగతి తెలుసుకొని “ఓయి మీ అమాయకత్వం కూల! గుర్రం ఎక్కడైనా గుడ్డు పెడుతుందా?” అని అడిగాడు.
“ఏం? మేం నీ కంటికి వెర్రి వాళ్ళలా కనిపిస్తున్నామా? గుర్రం గుడ్డు ఖరీదు చెయ్యడానికి అవసరమైన సొమ్ము మా గురువుగారే ఇచ్చారు తెల్సా!” అన్నాడో శిష్యుడు.

దానికా బాటసారి, తనవద్ద ఓ గుర్రం ఉందనీ వారి భయం పోగొట్టేలా ఎంతో ఉదారంగా దాన్ని వారికి దానంగా ఇచ్చేయదల్బుకున్నా ననీ అన్నాడు.
“ఆహా! విధి విలాసం! ఇంతలోనే భగవంతుడు మనకి భయం కల్పించి, అంతలోనే దాన్ని పోగొట్టాడు. ఈ అపరిచితుడెవరో మనకు తెలీకున్నా విలువైన గుర్రాన్ని దానంగా మనకే ఇస్తున్నాడంటే విధి విలాసం కాక ఇంకేమిటి?” అనుకొని శిష్యులు ఆ “మహాత్ముని” వెంట వెళ్ళారు.
అతడు తన ఇంటికి తీసుకెళ్ళి, తనవద్ద ఉన్నగుర్రాన్ని వాళ్ళపరం చేశాడు. ఇది దానంగా ఇచ్చినది కనుక-దీన్ని "మీరు దాన విక్రయాధికారసహితంగా ఉపయోగించుకోవచ్చు అన్నాడు.

The Horse and the Egg
One day, the wise teacher Paramanandayya called two
of his students and gave them an important task. Their cow had been missing for
two days, and they needed to find it. Considering the upcoming rainy season, he
asked them to either search for the cow or buy supplies for the house.
The students split up in different directions. Some went to
find the cow, while others went to buy the things needed. The students
searching for the cow met those returning from other errands. Since the cow was
still missing, they decided, “Why don’t we buy a young horse instead?” and went
together with horse experts.
After walking a while, they saw a small farm. Next to it
were some green fields, a few horses grazing, and, surprisingly, some white
clay-like objects on the ground. The students had never seen these before.
Curious, they realized, “These must be horse eggs! If we buy
a horse and get its eggs, it will be cheaper than buying a fully grown horse.”
Excited, they went back to Paramanandayya to tell him.

They explained, “Teacher, the cow is still missing, but we
saw some horse eggs. If we buy them, it will be cheaper than buying a horse.”
Paramanandayya laughed and said, “Oh! That’s a clever
thought—but eggs need to be hatched properly! If you sit on them carefully
every day, they might hatch into foals.”
Trusting their teacher’s guidance, the students were given
some money to buy the “horse eggs.” They went back to the farm and asked the
farmer, “How much for these horse eggs?”
The farmer, surprised by their boldness, said, “These are
not ordinary horse eggs—they come from royal breed horses. Usually, no one can
get them easily. How many do you want?”

“One is enough,” said a student. The farmer named the price,
but, seeing their innocence and determination, he generously reduced it a
little. The students paid and carefully carried the egg on their way home.
On the way, one student accidentally dropped it. The egg
cracked, and a small foal ran out, startling the students! They chased it but
soon realized it was too fast and clever to catch.
Disappointed but not discouraged, the students continued on,
thinking, “Even though the egg is broken, we at least learned something new and
had an adventure. Sometimes, things don’t go as planned, but we still gain
experience.”
When they reached their teacher, they explained everything
honestly. Paramanandayya smiled and said, “It doesn’t matter if the foal
escaped. What matters is your honesty, effort, and learning. That’s the real
lesson.”
Moral of the Story:
Sometimes plans don’t work out, but honesty, effort, and
learning from experience are more valuable than success itself.
