తన అసమాన ప్రజ్ఞాశాలురైన పదిమంది శిష్యుల తో, చుట్టు ప్రక్కలగ్రామాలకు వెళ్ళి ధన, కనక, వస్తు వాహనాలు విరాళంగా సేకరించుకొనే నిమిత్తం ఓ శుభ ముహూర్తాన తెల్లవారుజామునే బయల్దేరారు పరమానందయ్య,
ఆ రోజు వారి అదృష్టం బాగుండి గ్రామస్తులు ఇచ్చిన ధనం, బియ్యం, వస్తువులు చాలా మూటలుగా కట్టుకుని తిరిగి మఠం వైపు ప్రయాణం సాగించారు.
“ఏటివరకూ అయ్యవారినీ, వారి శిష్యుల్నీ దిగవిడిచి రమ్మని” ఓ పుణ్యాత్ముడు బండి ఏర్పాటు చేయడంతో ఏటి ఒడ్డు వరకు సుఖంగా ప్రయాణం సాగింది గురుశిష్యులకు. అక్కడ్నుంచి బండివాడు సామాన్లన్నీ దించి సెలవు పుచ్చుకుని వెళ్లిపోయాడు.
“తాము వెళ్ళేటప్పుడు పాదాల్లోతు నీళ్ళున్న ఏటికి, ఇంతలోనే ఇన్ని నీళ్ళు ఎలా వచ్చాయబ్బా?” అనే సందేహం పట్టుకుంది శిష్యులకు. ఏట్లోకి ఎప్పుడైనా నీళ్ళు రావచ్చుననే జ్ఞానం వారికీ వారి గురువైన పరమానందయ్యకీ కూడాలేదు.
“ఇంత సామానుతో వస్తుంటే, ఈర్ష్యకొద్ద్మీ మా ప్రయాణానికి అడ్డు పడాలనే ఏరు పొంగిపొర్లి ప్రవహిస్తోంది” అని గురు శిష్యులేకమై తీర్మానించేశారు.
“సరే! ఇక చెయ్యడానికేముంది? ఏరు ఎంతసేపు మేలుకొని ఉంటుంది? ఏదో సమయాన దానిక్కూడా నిద్ర ముంచుకొస్తుందిగా? ఆ సమయం చూసి చకచకా ఏరు దాటేస్టే సరి!” అని ఒక శిష్యుడన్నాడు.

“పొగరుబోతు ఏరు గురువుగారూ! దీన్నిలా వదిలెయ్యకూడదు. మీదేమో జాలిగుండె. కరవ వచ్చిన పామునైనా పోన్లే పాపం! అంటారు. మా తాత మాత్రం పొగరుబోతుల్ని శిక్షించాల్సిందే అనేవాడు” అంటూనే ఒక కాగడా వెలిగించాడు.
“పట్టపగలు ఇంకా చీకటైనా పడకుండానే కాగడా దేనికిరా ?” అని అడిగాడు ఒక శిష్యుడు.
"ఏరును భయపెట్టడానికి కాగడా వెలిగించాడు శిష్యుడు"
“ఓరి. సన్నాసీ ! మనవాడు జాగ్రత్త పరుడు. ఇప్పుడంటే సాయంకాలం. ఇంకాస్సేపటికి చీకటి పడదా? అప్పుడు చీకటిలో ఏం తడుముకోవడం అని ముందు జాగ్రత్త చర్యగా వెలిగించాడన్న మాట!”- గురువుగారు సమర్ధించారు.
“అది కాదండీ గురువుగారూ! నేనిప్పుడు ఈ కాగడాతో ఆ పొగరు ఏరుకు చురక పెడతా! బుద్దొచ్చి దారి వదుల్తుంది” అంటూ కాగడా తీసుకొని ఏట్లోకి రెండడుగులు వేసి, అది నీట్లో ముంచాడు. 'చుయ్'మని పెద్ద శబ్దం చేస్తూ, అది ఆరిపోయేసరికి “ఓసి నీ సిగ్గోయ్యా! ఇంకా బుస్సుమంటూ అరుస్తావేం” అంటూ గుండలరచేత పట్టుకుని అందరూ ఉన్నచోట కొచ్చిపడ్డారు.
“ఏమయిందిరా?” అని అడిగాడొక శిష్యుడు.
“దానికి బాగా పొగరు బలిసింది. వాతలకు లొంగేలా లేదు. చురకేస్తే కరవ్వొస్తోంది. ఇహ లాభంలేదు” అన్నాడు కాగడాతో వెళ్ళిన శిష్యుడు.
“చూశార్రా! నేను ముందే చెప్పలా? ఏరు నిద్రపోయే దాకా వేచి ఉండటమే మనకు ఇప్పుడున్న దారి” మళ్ళీ మొదటి శిష్యుడు అందుకున్నాడు.
ఇంతలో ఆ రేవు దగ్గరికి వచ్చిన ఓ జాలరి వీళ్ళతీరు చూసి, మరింతగా ఉడికించాలని “అయ్వోర్లూ! నిజమేనండి! ఈ ఏరు మహా దొంగది. దీన్నస్సలు నమ్మకూడదు” అన్నాడు.
“ఏం నాయనా? నీకూ టోకరా ఇచ్చిందా? నీ వలగానీ, చేపల బుట్టగానీ కాజేసిందా ఏమిటీ?” అని అడిగారు పరమానందయ్య ఆసక్తిగా.
“చేపలూ, అవీ దానికెందుకండీ? వీటిలోన అవే ఉంటాయి. నాగ్గాదు గానీ, మా తాతకిది గొప్ప మోసం చేసిందండి! ఆయనేమో ఉప్పు అమ్మేవాడు. ఓసారి ఈ ఏరే ఇలాగే అడ్డంపడి పొంగి పొర్లుతూ ప్రవహించే సరికి, ఆ ధాటికి ఆగలేక నట్టనడి ఏట్లో బండి బోల్తా పడింది.
మా తాత అతికష్టంమీద బండిని ఏటి అవతలకి దాటించి బస్తాల్లోకి చూద్దుడు గదా! ఒక్క ఉప్పురవ్వ ఉంటే ఒట్టు. మొత్తం పదిబస్తాల ఉప్పు కాజేసింది. ఆ నష్టానికి ఆయన ఆర్నెల్లు మంచమెక్కాడు కూడా” జాలరి చిత్రంగా చేతులు తిప్పుతూ అన్నాడు.
“ఉప్పునే మాయం చేసిందంటే బాబోయ్! ఇన్ని సరుకున్నాయి.
ముఖ్యంగా తామందరికీ ఇష్టమైన బెల్లం ఉంది. అది గాని కాజేస్తే, చాలా కష్టం!” అనుకున్న పరమానందయ్య అందర్నీ ఏరు నిద్రపోయే వరకూ కూర్చోవాల్సిందిగా ఆజ్ఞాపించాడు.

Paramanandayya Crossing the River with His Disciples
Early one morning, Paramanandayya and his ten disciples
set out to nearby villages to collect donations of food, money, and other
essentials for their monastery. Their luck was good—villagers generously
offered grains, money, and goods, which they packed into bundles and
loaded onto a boat.
A local well-wisher arranged for the boat to take them safely
partway. At the riverbank, the helper left, and the disciples noticed
something troubling:
"How did the river suddenly rise so much? Will the
water stop us from returning?"
The disciples concluded that the river itself was jealous
of their good fortune and would try to block their path.
One disciple came up with a plan:
"We need to wait until the river falls asleep! Once
it rests, we can cross safely."
Clever Use of the Torch
Meanwhile, another disciple took a torch and
explained:
"We must wake the river with fire! Only then will it
obey our directions."
Paramanandayya agreed:
"Even if it’s still daylight, a little precaution is
wise. If darkness comes, we’ll be ready."
The brave disciple carefully placed the torch into the
river. With a loud ‘chuy’, the water settled, and the river calmed down.
Everyone cheered and felt relieved:
"See? We just wait until the river sleeps; then
crossing is safe."
