coverపట్టువదలని విక్రమార్కుడు చెట్టు వద్దకు తిరిగి వెళ్లి, చెట్టుపైనుంచి శవాన్ని దించి భుజాన వేసుకుని, ఎప్పటిలాగే మౌనంగా శ్మశానం కేసి నడవ సాగాడు. అప్పుడు శవంలోని బేతాళుడు, “రాజా, చేపట్టిన కార్యం సాధించి తీరాలన్న పట్టుదలతో, అర్ధరాత్రి వేల ఈ స్మశానంలో నువ్వు పడుతున్న శ్రమ చూస్తుంటే, నాకు నిన్ను గురించి ఒక శంక కలుగుతున్నది. అదేమంటే – అసలు నువ్వు సాధించదలచిన కార్యం ఏమిటి? అది నీ శక్తి సామర్థ్యాలకు, ప్రతిభకు, కీర్తి ప్రతిష్ఠలు తెచ్చేదా? లేక నలుగురిలో నిన్ను అవమానమూ, అపహాస్యాలపాలు చేసేదా? ఎందుకంటే, ఎవరూ తమ స్థాయికి మించిన పనులకు పూసుకోరాదని అనుభవజ్ఞులు చెబుతుంటారు. వారి మాటల్లోని వాస్తవాన్ని నిరూపించేందుకు ఉదాహరణగా, వీనాధరి అనే ఒక యువతి కథ చెబుతాను, శ్రమ తెలియకుండా, విను,” అంటూ ఇలా చెప్పా సాగాడు.
చంద్రశిలా రాజ్యలో రాజయ్యా అనే పేదరైతు ఉండేవాడు. అతడి భార్య కామాక్షి. వాళ్లకు చాలా కాలం గడిచేక, ఒక ఆడపిల్ల పుట్టింది. ఆ శిశువును చూసి అందరూ అద్భుతం చెందారు. ఆ శిశువు కనుముక్కు తీరుతోపాటు శరీరం మేలిని బంగారంతో తులతూగేలా వుంది. అటువంటి అందాలరాశి తన కుమార్తె అయినందుకు రాజయ్య సంతోషించి, ఆమెకు వీణాధరి అని పేరు పెట్టుకున్నాడు.
అలా నెలలు, సంవత్సరాలూ గడిచి పోతూ, వీణాధరి పెరిగి పెద్దదవుతున్న కొద్దీ, ఆమె సౌందర్యం మరింత వికసించ సాగింది. అమ్మలక్కలు ఆమెతో, “నీ అద్భుత సౌందర్యం చూసి, ఏ రాజకుమారుదో నిన్ను వివాహమాడుతాడు!” అని హాస్యమాడుతూ వుండేవారు.
ఈ విధంగా వీణాధరి మనస్సులో తన వంటి అందగత్తెకు సరిజోడు ఏ రాజకుమారుదో తప్ప సామాన్యుడు కాదనే అభిప్రాయం బలంగా ముద్రపడిపోయింది.

వీణాధరి, శివుడు యుక్తివయస్కులయ్యారు. ఒకనాడు, వీనాధరితో, “వీణా! నా మనసులోని మాట చెబుతున్నాను. నువ్వంటే నాకు ప్రాణం. నువ్వు ఒప్పుకుంటే మన పల్లి జరిగేలా చేస్తాను,” అన్నాడు.

అందుకు వెంటనే వీణాధరి, “ నిన్ను పెల్లాడాలన్న కోరిక నాకేమాత్రం లేదు.” అన్నది.
ఆ మాటకు శివుడు నొచ్చుకుని, “ఇందులో బలవంతం ఏమి లేదు. నేను మాత్రం నిన్ను తప్ప ఎవ్వరిని పెళ్ళాడను.” అన్నాడు.
ఆ జవాబుకు వీణాధరి మౌనంగా ఊరుకున్నది. తనవంటి సామాన్యురాలు రాకుమారుడిని వివాహమాడి రాణివాసం చేయడానికి అసాధారణమైన సౌందర్యమే కాక, మంచి వేషభాషలు, నడవడిక కూడా అవసరం అని, ఆమె ఆలోచించింది. ఇందుకుగాను, కొంత కాలం మహారాణికి పరిచారికగా వుంది, అనుభవం గడించడం అవసరం అనుకుంది.
వీణాధరి స్నేహితురాలిన పద్మదీపిక అనే యువతి, మహారాణి చంద్రావతి వద్ద పరిచారికగా పనిచేస్తున్నది. ఆమె ద్వారా, వీణాధరి మాహారాణి వద్ద పరిచారికగా ఆశ్రయం సంపాదించింది.
Veenadhari_2 ఒక సారి మహారాణి వద్దకు ఒక చిత్రకారుడు వచ్చి, “మహారాణి! నేనొక చిర్తపటం తయారుచేసి, తమకు కానుకగా తెచ్చాను” అన్నాడు.
వీణాధరి ఆ చిత్రపటాన్ని అందుకుని, మహారాణికి ఇచ్చింది.
ఆ చిత్రపటంలో అస్తమిస్తున్న సూర్యుడు అద్భుతంగా చిత్రిన్చాబడ్డాడు. ఆ చిత్రంలోని రంగులు మేలవిమ్పుకు ముగ్దురాలైన చంద్రావతి, చిత్రకారుడికి వేయి వరహాలు బహుమతిగా ఇచ్చింది.
తర్వాత ఆమె వీనాధరిని దగ్గరికి పిలిచి, “ఎలా వుంది చిత్రపటం?” అని అడిగింది.
అందుకు వీణాధరి, “రోజు చూసే సూర్యుడే గదా! అందులో విసేశామేమున్నది. ఏమైనా, దీనికి వేయి వరహాల బహుమతి చాలా ఎక్కువనుకుంటాను.” అని జవాబిచ్చింది.
ఆ మాటకు మహారాణి నవ్వి, “వీణా, భగవంతుడు నీకు అందమైన రూపం ఇచ్చాదేగాని, కళాహృదయం ఇవ్వలేదు. సరే ఇచ్చే బహుమానం మా స్థాయికి తగినట్లున్దాలన్న సంగతి నువ్వేరగావా?” అన్నది.
Veenadhari_3 ఒక రోజు మహారాణి, మహారాజూ తమ మందిరంలో కూర్చుని వుండగా, వీణాధరి వింజామర వీస్తున్నది. అప్పుడు ఒక గూఢచారి అక్కడికి వచ్చి, “మహారాజా! వైదేహిరాజు మన రాజ్యంపై దాడి చేయడానికి సైన్యాన్ని సమాయుత్త పరిచాడు. ఆది ఏ క్షణాన అయినా జరగవచ్చు” అని చెప్పి వెళ్ళిపోయాడు.
యుద్ధవార్త వినగానే వీణాధరి భయంతో పంపిస్తూ, వింజామార వీచడం మరిచిపోయింది. మహారాణి మాత్రం నిశ్చలంగా ఏదో ఆలోచిస్తూ ఉండిపోయింది.
మహారాజు, ఆమెతో, “శక్తిసింహుడు దాడి చేయవచ్చు గాని, అది అకస్మాత్తుగా మాత్రం కాదు. అతడు దాటవలసిన స్వర్ణముఖి నడీ తీరాన మన సైన్యం తగు జాగ్రత్తలోనే వుంది!” అని వీణాధరి కేసి తల తిప్పి చూసి, “అంతః పురంలోని వాళ్ళే యుద్ధవార్త విని ఇంతగా భయపడిపోతే, ఇక సామాన్యులు మాటేమిటి? ధైర్యంగా వుండడం నేర్చుకో.” అన్నాడు.

ఒక నాడు రాణి చంద్రావతి వనవిహారానికి బయలుదేరింది. ఆమెతో పాటు పరిచారికలందరూ బయలుదేరారు. అయితే, వీణాధరి మాత్రం శిరోవేదన నెపం పెట్టి తప్పించుకున్నది. అందుకు కారణం – మహారాణి లేనప్పుడు, ఆమె నగలు అలంకరించుకుని, అద్దంలో చూసుకోవాలన్న కోరిక, వీనాదరికి చాలా కాలంగా వున్నది.
మహారాణి వనవిహారానికి వెళ్ళగానే వీణాధరి, ఆమె పట్టువస్త్రాలు, నగలు ధరించి, అద్దం ముంది నిలబడింది.
అంతలో ఒక యువకుడు, అక్కడికి వచ్చాడు. అతడు వీణాధరి సౌందర్యానికి అబ్బురపాటు చెంది, “సుందరీ! ఎవరు నువ్వు?” అని ప్రశ్నించాడు.

అందుకు యువకుడు, “నేను రాజ్యం యువరాజు విజయదీపుడిని. విద్యాభ్యాసం ముగించుకుని, ఇప్పుడే గురుకులం నుంచి వస్తున్నాను. నీ సౌందర్యం నన్ను దిగ్భ్రాంతుదిని చేసింది. నీకు సమ్మతమైతే, పెద్దల అంగీకారంతో మన వివాహము జరిగేలా చూస్తాను,” అన్నాడు.
ఇది విని వీణాధరి, తను పరిహాసమాదించిన యువకుడు సాక్షాత్తు యువరాజేనని గ్రహించించింది. మరుక్షణం ఆమె విజయదీపుడి పాదాలకు నమస్కరించింది. “యువరాజులు క్షమించాలి! నేను మహారాణి పరిచారికను. మహారాణి ఆభరణాలు ధరించి చూసుకోవాలన్న చిత్తచాన్చాల్యముతోనూ, మీరెవరో తెలియక తప్పుగా ప్రవర్తించాను. నా తప్పు క్షమించండి!” అని వేడుకున్నది.
నిజం తెలుసుకున్న విజయదీపుడు చిరునవ్వుతో, “భయపడకు! నేను మట్టిలోని మాణిక్యం విలువ గ్రహించాలనేగాని కాలదన్నిపోను. నువ్వు పరిచారికవైనా, పరిణయమాడ దలిచాను.” అన్నాడు.

ఆ ప్రశ్నకు విజయదీపుడు ఎంతగానో ఆశ్చర్యపోయాడు. “యువరాజంత వాణ్ణి అడిగితె, ఏ యువతి కాదనగలడు? నువ్వు అంగీకరించకపోతే, అందుకు కారణం నువ్వు వట్టి ఆహాన్కారివైన అయి వుండాలి, లేదా మూర్ఖురాలైనా అయి వుండాలి. అలా అయిన పక్షంలో నేను, నిన్ను మించిన అందగత్తెను వివాహమాదగాలను.” అన్నాడు.
ఆ వెంటనే వీణాధరి, “క్షమించండి, యువరాజా! నేను మిమ్మల్ని వివాహమాడలేను. కారణం, వివాహం మరొకరితో, ఏనాడో నిశ్చయమైపోయింది.” అని అక్కడ నుంచి బయలుదేరి, గ్రామచేరి, తనను ప్రేమించిన శివుణ్ణి వివాహమాడింది.
బేతాళుడు ఈ కథ చెప్పి, “రాజా, వీణాధరి చిన్నప్పటి నుంచీ రాజకుమారుడిని వివాహమాడాలని కలలు కన్నది కదా! ఆ కళలు నిజమవుతున్న క్షణంలో, చేజేతులా జారవిడుచుకోవడానికి కారణం ఏమిటి? తను ఒక దేశం రాణి కావడానికి అనర్హురాలని గ్రహించడం వల్లనా? మహారాణి, ఆమెలో కళాహృదయం లేదని చిన్నగా మందలించింది.
మహారాజు, ఆమెకు ధైర్యంగా వుండడం నేర్చుకోవాలని గట్టిగానే చెప్పాడు. ఇది జరిగాక, వీణాధరి తన స్థాయికి, శక్తిసామర్థ్యాలకు మించిన కార్యం సాధించావూనానని గ్రహించి ఉంటుందా? ఈ సందేహాలకు సమాధానము తెలిసి కూడా చెప్పకపోయావో, నీ తల పగిలిపోతుంది.” అన్నాడు.
దానికి విక్రమార్కుడు, “వీణాధరి, యువరాజును తిరస్కరించడానికి అవేవీ కారణాలు కావు. ఆమె తను కన్నా కళలు వాస్తవం చేసుకున్నాక, ఇక స్థాయి, శక్తిసామర్థ్యాలు ప్రసక్తే వుండదు. ఆమె, యువరాజును అడిగిన ప్రశ్నకు ఆటను ఇచ్చిన జవాబే, ఆమె అతణ్ణి వివాహమాడ నిరాకరించడానికి ముఖ్య కారణం.
వీణాధరి తనతో వివాహమంగీకరించాకపోతే – ఆమెను మించిన మరొక అందగత్తెను వివాహమాదగాలనన్నాడు, యువరాజు. దీని అర్ధమేమిటంటే – ఏదో ఒకనాడు వీనధరిని మించిన సౌందర్యవతి కంట బడితే, యువరాజు ఆమెను భార్యగా చేసుకోగలదు. అప్పుడు వీణాధరి పరిస్థితి హీనమైపోతుంది. ఇది ఆలోచించే, ఆమె తన పగటికలలకు స్వప్తి చెప్పి, తననేన్తగానో ప్రేమిస్తున్న, తండ్రి స్నేహితుడి కొడుకైనా శివుణ్ణి వివాహమాడింది.” అన్నాడు.
రాజుకు ఈ విధంగా మౌనభంగం కలగగానే, బేతాళుడు శవంతో సహా మాయమై, తిరి చెట్టెక్కాడు.

Decision)
1. Story Introduction
The Vetala begins by teaching King Vikramarka a
lesson about understanding one’s capabilities. He tells a story of Veenadhari,
a girl born to a poor farmer Rajayya and his wife Kamakshi, who possessed extraordinary
beauty and grace, yet grew up with wisdom and prudence.
2. Veenadhari’s Youth
- As
Veenadhari grew, her beauty became renowned. Her friends teased her,
suggesting that only a prince could match her stature, not an
ordinary man.
- Rajayya’s
friend Chandrayya promised that Veenadhari would marry his son, Shiva,
establishing a future bond.
3. Veenadhari’s Decision and Wisdom
- When
Shiva expressed his desire to marry her, Veenadhari politely refused,
believing she was not yet ready for royal responsibilities.
- She
wanted to gain experience, grace, and social skills before
considering marriage to a prince.
- She
became a maidservant in Queen Chandravati’s palace, learning
etiquette and observing royal life through her friend Padmadeepika.
4. The Incident with the Painting
- A
painter presented a beautiful sunset painting to the Queen, which
Veenadhari delivered.
- She
modestly remarked that the reward was excessive for a mere painting,
showing her practical wisdom and humility.
- The
Queen laughed and told her that although she had beauty, she lacked the
heart of an artist, highlighting that grace alone is not
enough—experience and insight are necessary.
5. The Crisis and Courage
- One
day, a spy informed the Queen of an impending attack by King Vaidyehi.
- Veenadhari
panicked, but the Queen reassured her: “Courage comes from preparation,
not fear.”
- Veenadhari
realized the importance of remaining calm and alert, even in
dangerous situations.
6. The Young Prince and the Test
- While
the Queen was away, Veenadhari tried on her jewelry and clothing, curious
to experience royal adornments.
- A
young man appeared and was so impressed by her beauty that he asked her
identity.
- Veenadhari,
playful and clever, pretended to be a princess invited to a feast.
- The
young man revealed himself as Prince Vijayadeep, freshly returned
from his studies.
7. Veenadhari’s Decision
- Realizing
she had been interacting with the actual prince, Veenadhari apologized for
her playful deception.
- Vijayadeep
graciously accepted her apology and expressed that he valued inner
qualities over mere appearances.
- Veenadhari
asked a critical question: “What if I refuse the marriage?”
- Vijayadeep
replied wisely: “If you refuse, I will wait for someone greater than
you in virtue and beauty to marry. Your choice matters above all.”
- This
gave Veenadhari the clarity to choose her true love, Shiva,
honoring her heart and family ties, instead of succumbing to societal or
royal pressure.
