అనంత పుణ్య ఫలదాయిని అయిన కార్తీకమాసంలో, ఉసిరిచెట్టు నీడన వనభోజనం గొప్ప ఫలితం కలగజేస్తుందని పరమానందయ్యగారు అనడంతో, పమీపంలో ఉన్న అడవిలోనికెళ్ళి వనభోజన మహోత్సవం నిర్వహించడానికి శిష్యులు ఏర్పాట్లు చెయ్యసాగారు.
వారిలో చురుగ్గా ఉండే శిష్యుడి పేరు దేవభూతి. గురువుగారి ప్రియ శిష్యుడు. అందువల్ల అన్నం భాద్యత అతడు స్వీకరించాడు. మిగతా శిష్యులు కూరగాయలు, ఇతర పిండి వంటలు చేయసాగారు.
దేవభూతికి కాస్త సంగీత జ్ఞానం కూడా ఉంది. పొయ్యిమీద బియ్యం పెట్టి తాళంవేస్తూ కూనిరాగాలు అందుకున్నాడు. ఈలోగా అన్నం ఉడుకు పట్టిన శబ్ధం మొదలైంది. అది జాగ్రత్తగా విన్న దేవభూతి “ఆహా! మన రాగానికి తగ్గ తాళం కుండకే కుదిరింది. ఘటవాయిద్యం బహాుశ్రేష్టమంటారు” అనుకుంటూ రాగాలాపనలో కొత్త కొత్త ఫణితులు (సంగతులు) వేయసాగాడు.
అన్నం ఉడికే శబ్దం క్రమంగా పల్చ్బబడేసరికి “దీన్తస్సాదియ్యా!
నేనింత ఉత్సాహంగా సంగతుల మీద సంగతులు దంచేస్తుంటే, ఇది తాళం తప్పుతోందే” అని ఆవేశంగా పొయ్యిలో పెట్టడానికి ఉంచిన కట్టెనొకటి తీసుకొని కుండమీద ఒక్కదెబ్బ వేశాడు. అంతే! ఇంకేముందీ? మరి కాస్సేపట్లో సిద్ధం కానున్న అన్నం నేలపాలై, పొయ్యికూడా ఆరిపోయింది.
“గుడగుడ శబ్దం-కుండకు నష్టం” అని పాడుకుంటూ వంట ప్రయత్నం విరమించి రాగాలు తీస్తూ కూర్చున్నాడు దేవభూతి.
ఆ పక్కనే కూరగాయలు తరుగుతున్న ఇద్దరు శిష్యుల్లో ఒకడు వంకాయలు అందుకుని, “వంకాయ వాతం” అంటూ ఆ బుట్టెడు వంకాయలూ చెరువులో పోసి వచ్చాడు. ఇంకో శిష్యుడు అటుగా వచ్చి “సోరకాయ శ్లేష్మం” అంటూ పది సారకాయల్ని పది దిక్కులా విసిరేశాడు.
మరో ఉద్దండుడు “అతి తెలివి సోదరులారా! మీలో ఒక్కరికీ స్ఫురించలేదు. సర్వరోగ నివారిణి, ఈ అడవిలో విస్తారంగా లభించేది కరక్కాయ. అది కూర వండండి” అని సెలవిచ్చాడు. అందరూ కరక్కాయల వేటలో పడ్డారు.
అన్ని అనుష్టానాలూ_ ముగించుకొని, బారెడు పొద్దెక్కి మిట్టమధ్యాహ్నం కూడా అయ్యాక గురువుగారూ, గురుపత్నీ నిదానంగా తమ శిష్యులు వండి వార్చే పంచభక్ష పరమాన్నాలను ఆరగిద్దామని నిజంగానే ఆత్రపడి వనభోజన ప్రదేశానికి చేరుకోగా ఏముందక్కడ? ఆరిపోయిన పొయ్యిలో సగం ఉడికీ ఉడకని అన్నం కుండపెంకుల మధ్య పరుచుకొని ఉండడం తప్ప.
కూరల జాడ ఎక్కడా లేదు. పిండివంటల ఆచూకీ అస్సలు లేదు. శిష్యులంతా ఒక్కో అవస్థలో చెట్టుమీద ఒకడూ, చెట్టుక్రింద ఒకడూ, కొమ్మల్లో ఊగుతూ ఒక్కడూ.... .
“ఏమిటర్రా ఇదంతా?” అని అడిగితే “కరక్కాయల కోత" గురువుగారూ! కనీసం ఐదారు వీశెల కరక్కాయలైనా లేనిదే కూర సరిపోడు కదా! ఇప్పటికి రెండు వీశెల కరక్కాయలు పోగుచేయగలిగాం. ఎంత రాత్రికైనా కరక్కాయలు ఐదు వీశెలూ పూర్తిచేసి, చిటికెలో కూర వండి వార్చెయ్యమూ?” అంటూ అంతా ముక్త కంఠంతో ఒకటే జవాబు.
“కరక్కాయల కూర?” అంటూ ఆశ్చర్యపోయిన గురుపత్నికి “మీకు తెలీదమ్మగారూ! అన్నిరోగాలనూ కుదిర్చే గుణం కరక్కాయకు ఉందని గురువు గారెప్పుడూ అంటుంటారు కదా! కావాలంటే అడగండి” అని ఆ ప్రతిపాదన తెచ్చిన శిష్యుని సంజాయిషీ.
“వీళ్ళని నమ్ముకుని విందు భోజనానికి వస్తే, అర్ధరాత్రయినా పస్తే” అని గ్రహించుకున్న పేరిందేవి “ఓరి తెలివి తక్కువ సన్నాసుల్లారా! మీ నిర్వాకాన్ని నమ్ముకోవడం నాదే తప్పు! ఉదయాన్నే నేనైనా వచ్చి మడిగట్టుకున్నాను కాదు”,అని అప్పటికప్పుడు ఆవిడ నడుం కట్టుకొని చంద్రోదయవేళకు అంతా సిద్ధం చేసేసరికి, ఆ సాయంత్రం కార్తీక సోమవారం ఫలం దక్కేలా ఎట్టకేలకు వనభోజనం ముగించగలిగారందరూ.

Karthika Somavara Vratham – Forest Feast
During the holy month of Karthika, Paramanandayya
decided that a forest feast under the shade of the Usiri tree would
bring great spiritual merit. His disciples eagerly prepared for this special vanabhojana
(forest picnic feast).
Among the disciples, Devabhooti was the most active
and a favorite of the guru. He took responsibility for cooking the rice, while
the other disciples prepared vegetables and various flour-based dishes.
Devabhooti, who also had some knowledge of music, kept a beat
with a small pot while singing tunes. He noticed the rice cooking and
synchronized it to his rhythm. Enthusiastic, he kept creating new musical
phrases (ragas) to match the cooking sounds.
In his excitement, however, he accidentally hit the pot too
hard. The fire went out, and half-cooked rice was left scattered.

"Oh no! The pot is damaged!" Devabhooti
exclaimed and stopped cooking, sitting down to continue his music instead.
Meanwhile, two other disciples were chopping vegetables. One
threw two brinjals into the nearby pond, calling it “Vankaya Vatham,”
and another tossed ten sorakaya (ridge gourd) pieces in all directions.
A wiser disciple intervened:
"Brothers, you’re missing the main point! The karakkaya
(bitter gourd), known to cure many diseases, is abundant in this forest. Use it
to make the curry!"
Everyone shifted focus to gathering karakkaya,
carefully preparing the vegetables.
By late afternoon, Paramanandayya, his wife, and the
disciples finally reached the forest feast spot. To their dismay, the
partially cooked rice was still scattered, and none of the vegetables were
ready. The disciples were exhausted, scattered on tree branches and under
trees, trying to salvage the situation.

Paramanandayya asked:
"What happened here?"
The disciples replied in unison:
"Guru, it’s the karakkaya! At least five handfuls
are needed to make proper curry. So far, we’ve managed only two handfuls. Let
us finish the rest and serve a wholesome meal!"
His wife, amazed, said:
"Karakkaya curry? Really? You mean the bitter gourd
that cures all ailments, as Guru always says?"
The disciples confirmed, and everyone set to work. Even
though it was late in the evening, they managed to complete the vanabhojana,
ensuring the Karthika Somavaram Vratham would yield its spiritual
benefit.
