పూర్వం బసవయ్య అనే వేటగాడు అడవి పక్కన ఉన్న కొమ్ముగూడెం లో నివసిస్తూండేవాడు. గూడెం పక్కనున్న అడవి లోని జంతువులు, పక్షులే అతనికి జీవనాధారం. వాటిని పట్టి సమీప గ్రామాల్లో అమ్ముకుని జీవిస్తూండేవాడు. ఒకనాడు ఎప్పటిలాగే అడవిలోకి వెళ్లేసరికి బాట పక్కన సగం తినేసిన మనిషి శవం కనబడ్డది. దానికి కాస్త దూరంలో నేల మీద మెరుస్తూ బంగారం గొలుసు కనబడేసరికి దాన్ని చేతిలోకి తీసుకున్నాడు. సంతోషంగా మెడలో వేసుకున్నాడు. తర్వాత ఓ కుందేలును వేటాడి ఇంటికి తీసుకునిపోయాడు.
ఓ నెల తర్వాత ‘దసరా పండగ వస్తుంది. ఇంట్లోకి సరుకులు, పిల్లలకు మనకు బట్టలు తీసుకురండి,’ అంది భార్య. ‘మనవద్ద దాచిపెట్టిన డబ్బులెేం లేవు. ఈ గొలుసు అమ్మి తెస్తాను,’ అని చెప్పి పట్నానికి బయలుదేరాడు. నేరుగా కంసాలి కనకయ్య దుకాణానికి వెళ్లి, గొలుసు చూపించి ‘దీన్ని తీసుకుని వచ్చినంత డబ్బివ్వండి,’ అనడిగాడు.
కంసాలి కనకయ్య ఆ గొలుసుని చూసి ఆశ్చర్యపోయాడు. ఇది తను చేసిందే. ఏడాది క్రితం దాన్ని మురారికి ఇచ్చాను. నెల నుంచి అతడు కనిపించడంలేదు.
ఇతనే గొలుసు కోసం మురారిని చంపి ఉంటాడు అనుకుని వెంటనే భటులకు సైగ చేసాడు. రాజభటులు నాగతో సహా బసవయ్యను లాక్కుని వెళ్లి, న్యాయాధికారి ముందు నిలబెట్టారు. ఇంతలో మురారి భార్య కూడా ఏడుస్తూ న్యాయాధికారికి మొర పెట్టుకుంది.
అయ్యా, ‘నా భర్తను ఇతడే చంపేసి ఉంటాడు. ఇంత ఘాతుకానికి పాల్పడిన ఇతగాడికి మరణదండన విధించి నా గొలుసు నాకిప్పించండి. నా భర్త జ్ఞాపకార్థం దానిని అట్టిపెట్టుకుంటాను’ అని ఆమె కన్నీళ్లు పెట్టుకుని న్యాయాధికారిని వేడుకొంది.
న్యాయాధికారి పేరు ధర్మరాజు. సమయస్ఫూర్తి తో వ్యవహరిస్తాడని, న్యాయబద్దంగా తీర్పు చెబుతాడని తనకు చాలా పేరుంది.
తన ఎదుట నిర్భయంగా నిలబడ్డ బసవయ్యతో, ‘ఈ నగ నీకు ఎక్కడిది? నిజం చెప్పు!’ అని అడిగాడు న్యాయాధికారి.

‘అయ్యా! ఉదయమే నేను వేటకు వెళుతుంటే, జంతువులు తినేసిన సగం మనిషి శవం దారి పక్కన కనబడింది. ఆ పక్కనే ఈ గొలుసు పడి ఉంటె తీసుకున్నాను. సొంతదారుకు ఇద్దామన్నా అక్కడ ఎవరూ లేరు. ఇప్పుడు కుటుంబ అవసరాల కోసం అమ్ముదామని వస్తే, భటులు నన్ను పట్టుకుని, దొంగ అని మీ ఎదుట నిలబెట్టారు,’ అన్నాడు బసవయ్య సదురు బెదురూ లేకుండా.
‘నువ్వు అబద్ధం చెబుతున్నావని మురారి భార్య అంటోంది. నువ్వే నగకోసం మురారిని చంపలేదని నమ్మకమేమిటి?’ అనడిగాడు ధర్మరాజు.
‘అయ్యా! నేను వేటగాడినే కానీ, దొంగను కాను. నన్ను నమ్మండి, కావాలంటే మీరుపరీక్షించుకోవచ్చు,’ అన్నాడు బసవయ్య.

‘ఏం పరీక్ష చేయమంటావు? నీ విలువిద్యా ప్రావీణ్యం ఏపాటిదో చూపిస్తావా?’ అనడిగాడు ధర్మరాజు.
‘నా వెంట అడవికి రండి. జంతువుల్ని, నాకు నగ దొరికిన స్థలాన్ని కూడా చుపిస్తాను,’ అన్నాడు బసవయ్య ధీమాగా.
సరేనని, న్యాయాధికారి, మురారి తమ్ముడిని వెంటబెట్టుకుని వేటగాడితో అడవిలోకి వెళ్ళాడు. బసవయ్యను చూసిన కాకులు కావ్.. కావ్.. మంటూ గోలగోలగా అరవసాగాయి. జింకలు, నక్కలు భయంతో అడవిలో పరుగులు పెట్టసాగాయి.
‘నిజమే, నువ్వు వేటగాడివే అని నమ్ముతున్నాను. స్థలం చూపించు,’ అన్నాడు న్యాయాధికారి.
బసవయ్య న్యాయాధికారిని వెంటబెట్టుకుని ఆ స్థలం వద్దకు వెళ్లి, చూపించసాగాడు. ఇంతలో హఠాత్తుగా గాండ్రు గాండ్రు మంటూ పెద్ద పులి అరుపు వినిపించింది.

‘అదుగో, మనిషిని చంపిన పులి వస్తుంది. కనుకే మాటు వేసుకుని కూర్చుంది మరో మనిషి కోసం. మీరు చెట్టెక్కండి,’ అని బసవయ్య వాళ్ళను చెట్టెకించాడు. తర్వాత అతడు కూడా ఆ చెట్టు ఎక్కి బాణం సిద్ధంగా పట్టుకుని కూర్చున్నాడు.
కాస్సేపటికి పులి వాళ్ళు కూర్చున్న చెట్టు కిందకి వచ్చి, మనుషుల్ని అందుకోవడం కోసం, చెట్టుపైకి ఎక్కడానికి ప్రయత్నించసాగింది.
బసవయ్య బాణం సంధించి, పులి మీదికి సూటిగా వదిలాడు. డొక్కలో దిగిన బాణంతో, పులి పెద్దగా అరుస్తూ కొద్ది దూరం వెళ్లి నేల మీద పడి చనిపోయింది. అందరూ చెట్టుమీద నుంచి దిగారు.
అప్పుడు న్యాయాధికారి బసవయ్యను మెచ్చుకోలుగా చూస్తూ, ‘నువ్వు దొంగవై ఉంటె మమ్మల్ని చంపేసి, మా మెళ్లో ఉన్న ఈ బంగారాన్ని కూడా తీసుకునేవాడివే. కానీ నువ్వు నిజమైన వేటగాడివి. నిన్ను అనవసరంగా అనుమానించినందుకు బాధపడుతున్నాను. మా ప్రాణాల్ని కూడ రక్షించినందుకు, నీకు బహుమతి గా ఈ హారం ఇస్తున్నాను తీసుకో,’ అని తన మెళ్లోఉన్న బంగారు గొలుసును వేటగాడి మేడలో వేశాడు.
‘అయ్యా! మీరు నన్ను వేటగాడిని నమ్మినందుకు సంతోషం. కానీ ఈ మాటలు ఇక్కడ కాదు. మీ న్యాయస్థానం లో పది మంది ముందు చెప్పండి,’ అని గొలుసు తిరిగి ఇచ్చివేశాడు బసవయ్య. న్యాయాధికారి అతని తెలివితేటలకు ఆశ్చర్యపడ్డాడు. ఆ విధంగానే తనతోపాటు అతడిని తీసుకువెళ్ళి, సభ ఏర్పాటు చేశాడు.
‘సభికులారా! మీతోపాటు నేనూ అనవసరంగా ఇతడిని అనుమానించాను. ఇతని సాహసం వల్లనే నేను తిరిగి మీ ముందు మాట్లాడగలుగుతున్నాను. బసవయ్య నిజమైన వేటగాడు. కాకుంటే మేము ఈ పాటికి పులికి ఆహారమైపోతుండేవాళ్ళమే.
బసవయ్యకు మురారి గొలుసు దొరికిందే కాని, మురారిని హత్య చేసి ఆ గొలుసును దొంగిలించలేదు,’ అని న్యాయాధికారి ధర్మరాజు జరిగిన సంఘటనంతా వివరించాడు. ప్రజలు అభినందన పూర్వకంగా చప్పట్లు చరిచారు.తరవాత ధర్మరాజు, రాజభటులు తెచ్చిన గొలుసును మురారి భార్య మణెమ్మకు ఇచ్చివేశారు.
అనంతరం న్యాయాధికారి తన మేడలో గొలుసును తీసి, ‘మా ప్రాణాలను రక్షించినందుకు బసవయ్యకు ఈ చిన్ని బహుమతిని ఇస్తున్నాను,’ అని ప్రకటించి తన మేడలోని హారం తీసి, బసవయ్య మెడలో వేయబోయాడు.
‘అయ్యా! మన్నించండి. మీ కానుకను తీసుకోలేను. మాకు పండుగ సరుకులు, బట్టలు ఇప్పించండి చాలు. గొలుసు మాత్రం వద్దు,’ అని వేడుకున్నాడు.

బసవయ్య మాటలను విని ఎదో అర్ధమైనట్లుగా నవ్వి, ఏడాదికి సరిపడా సరుకులు, అతని కుటుంబానికి సరిపోను బట్టలు పెట్టి, గౌరవంగా వీడ్కోలు పలికాడు న్యాయాధికారి.
బేతాళుడు ఈ కథ చెప్పి ‘రాజా, బసవయ్యను న్యాయాధికారి మొదట దొంగగా అనుమానించి తీసుకెళ్లాడా? అడవిలో గొలుసు ఇవ్వబోగా వేటగాడు ఎందుకు తీసుకోలేదు? న్యాయస్థానంలోనే ఎందుకు ఇవ్వమన్నాడు? న్యాయస్థానంలో ఇవ్వబోగా వద్దని సరుకులు, బట్టలు మాత్రమే ఎందుకు కోరాడు? బంగారం విలువ తెలియకనా? ఈ ప్రశ్నకు సమాధానం తెలిసి కూడా చెప్పకపోయావో నీ తల వేయి వక్కలవుతుంది,’ అన్నాడు.
అప్పుడు విక్రమార్కుడు, ‘న్యాయాధికారి సభలోనే బసవయ్య తడబడకుండా సమాధానాలు చెప్పిన తీరుకు అతడు వేటగాడనే నమ్మాడు. కానీ జనానికి నమ్మకం కలిగించడం కోసం మురారి బావమరిదిని తీసుకుని అడవికి వెళ్ళాడే గానీ భయంతో రక్షణ కోసం కాదు. దొంగని అనుమానిస్తే వెళ్ళేవాడే కాదు.
అడవిలో హారం ఇవ్వబోగా వద్దన్న బసవయ్య దానిని సభలో ఇమ్మని కోరింది తన నిర్దోషిత్వం నిరూపించుకోవడం కోసమే. అడవిలో గొలుసు తీసుకుని ఎవరి ఇండ్లకు వాళ్లు వెళ్లిపోతే, జనానికి నిజం తెలియక దొంగలాగే అనుమానిస్తారు. అందుకే సభలో ఇవ్వమని కోరాడు.
ఇంక ఆ పులి సంఘటన న్యాయాధికారి గాని, వేటగాడుగానీ అసలు ఊహించలేదు. తన ప్రాణాల్ని కాపాడాడనే కృతజ్ఞతతో న్యాయాధికారి హారం ఇద్దామనుకున్నాడు. సభలో హారాన్ని ఇస్తున్నా బసవయ్య వద్దనడానికి కారణం, వేటగాడు దాన్ని ఎల్లకాలమూ ధరించడు. ఏనాటికైనా హారాన్ని అమ్మి కుటుంబ అవసరాలు తీర్చుకోవలసిందే.
వెంటనే అమ్మితే న్యాయాధికారి బాధ అనిపించొచ్చు. జనానికి ఈర్ష్య, అనుమానం కలగొచ్చు. తన కుటుంబం గడపడానికి మాత్రమే సరుకులు కావాలి. బంగారం ఎప్పుడూ కోరుకోలేదు. అందుకే హారం వద్దని సరుకులు, వస్త్రాలు మాత్రమే ఇప్పించమని అడిగాడు.
న్యాయాధికారి మురారి భార్యకు భర్త హరం ఇప్పించి, వేటగాడికి కావలసిన వస్తువులు కూడా ఇప్పించి, ఇద్దరికీ సరైన న్యాయం చేశాడు,’ అని చెప్పాడు.
బేతాళుడికి సరైన సమాధానం లభించడంతో శవంతో సహా మాయమై తిరిగి చెట్టెక్కాడు.

The True Hunter
(A Bethala Story for Kids)
Long ago, a hunter named Basavayya lived in a small
village near a forest. He earned his living by hunting animals and birds and
selling them in nearby villages.
One day, while walking through the forest, he saw something
strange. By the roadside lay a half-eaten human body. Wild animals had attacked
it. A little distance away, something shiny caught his eye. It was a gold
chain.
Basavayya picked it up. There was no one around. He thought,
“I will keep this for now.” Then he continued his hunting and returned home.
The Trouble Begins
A month later, his wife said,
“Dasara festival is coming. We need clothes and supplies.”
Basavayya replied,
“We have no savings. I will sell the gold chain.”
He went to the town and showed the chain to a goldsmith
named Kanakayya.
The goldsmith was shocked.
“I made this chain for a man named Murari last year. He has been missing for a
month!”
Immediately, he informed the royal guards. Basavayya was
arrested and taken before the judge, Dharmaraju.
Murari’s wife came crying.
“This man must have killed my husband for the chain! Please punish him and
return the chain to me.”
The Hunter’s Answer
Judge Dharmaraju was known for giving fair judgments.
He asked Basavayya,
“Tell me the truth. Where did you get this chain?”
Basavayya calmly replied,
“Sir, I found it near a half-eaten body in the forest. I did not kill anyone. I
am a hunter, not a thief.”
The judge asked,
“Why should I believe you?”
Basavayya said,
“Come with me to the forest. I will show you the place.”

The Test in the Forest
The judge, along with Murari’s brother, went with Basavayya
to the forest.
As they reached the spot, suddenly a loud roar was heard. A
huge tiger appeared!
Basavayya quickly told them to climb a tree. Then he climbed
too, holding his bow ready.
The tiger tried to climb the tree. At the right moment,
Basavayya shot an arrow straight into it. The tiger fell down and died.
The judge was amazed.
He said,
“If you were a thief, you could have left us to die and taken our gold. But you
saved our lives. You are truly a brave hunter. I am sorry for doubting you.”
He tried to reward Basavayya with his own gold chain.
But Basavayya refused and said,
“Please say these words in the court in front of everyone.”
Justice in the Court
Back in the court, Judge Dharmaraju told everyone the truth.
“Basavayya is innocent. He did not kill Murari. He saved our
lives from a tiger.”
The people clapped with joy.
Murari’s chain was returned to his wife.
The judge again offered his own gold chain to Basavayya as a
reward.
But Basavayya politely said,
“Sir, I do not need gold. Please give my family clothes and supplies for the
festival. That is enough.”
The judge smiled, understanding his honesty. He gave
Basavayya enough food and clothes for a whole year and sent him home with
respect.
Moral of the Story
- Truth
always wins in the end.
- An
honest person does not become greedy, even when offered gold.
- Real
bravery is shown through actions, not words.
