పూర్వం కనకపురి రాజ్యాన్ని జయకేతనుడనే రాజు పాలించేవాడు. ఆయన కుమార్తె చంద్రరేఖ అద్భుత సౌందర్యవతి. ఆమెకు చదరంగం లో మంచి ప్రావీణ్యం వుండేది. రాజు జయకేతనుడు చదరంగం లో అత్యంత ప్రతిభావంతుడు కావడంతో, ఆమెకు బాల్యం నుంచి మంచి శిక్షణయివ్వడం వల్ల, చంద్రరేఖ చదరంగం లో రాటుతేలింది.
ఇలావుండగా ఒకనాడు చంద్రరేఖ వివాహ ప్రసక్తి వచ్చింది. ఆమె, తండ్రితో, “నాన్నగారూ! నన్ను చదరంగం లో ఓడించిన రాకుమారుణ్ణే వివాహమాడతాను. నాతో మొదటిసారి ఆడి ఓడిపోయిన రాకుమారుడికి నూరు కొరడా దెబ్బలు శిక్ష. రెండవసారి ఓడిపోతే, తిరిగి జీవితంలో వివాహం మాట తలపెట్టనని కులదైవం మీద ప్రమాణం చేయ్యాలి. ఇక, మూడవసారి కూడా ఓడిపోతే ఉరిశిక్షకు గురికావలసి ఉంటుంది. ఈ విధంగా చాటింపు వేయించండి,” అన్నది.

ఇలా ఉండగా- చారుశీల నగరాన్ని పాలించే సూర్యతేజకు, ఈ వింత స్వయంవరం వార్త తెలిసింది. అతడు అవివాహితుడు. అంతకుముందే చారులద్వారా రాకుమారి చంద్రరేఖ అద్భుతమైన సౌందర్యాన్ని గురించి విని వున్నాడు.

“ఒకవేళ ఈ నిబంధన మీరు విధించకపోయినా, నేను మరొక స్త్రీని వివాహం చేసుకునే అవకాశం లేదు. మీ సంతృప్తి కోసం, మీరు కోరినట్లే ప్రమాణం చేస్తున్నాను,” అని సూర్యతేజ తమ కులదైవమైన పరమశివుడి మీద ప్రమాణం చేశాడు.
ఇప్పుడు రెండవసారి పోటీ ప్రా రంభమైంది. ఈ సారి సూర్యతేజ తన సర్వశక్తులూ ఒడ్డి ప్రతి ఎత్తు వేయసాగాడు. చంద్రరేఖ మాత్రం నల్లేరు మీద నడకలా చక చక ఎత్తులు వేస్తున్నది. ఆమె వేగానికి, నైపుణ్యానికి సూర్యతేజ అబ్బురపడసాగాడు.

బేతాళుడు ఈ కథ చెప్పి, “రాజా, సూర్యతేజ మొదటిసారి చదరంగం పోటీలో ఓడినప్పుడు, చంద్రరేఖతో తాను సరితూగలేనని గ్రహించి ఉండాలి. అలాకాక, తిరిగి రెండవ సారి, మూడవసారి పోటీకి సిద్ధపడడం మూర్ఖత్వం కాదా? ఏదో స్త్రీ సహజమైన జాలితో మూడవసారి యువరాణి పోటీకి దిగకుండానేా, తను ఓడినట్లు చెప్పబట్టి సరిపోయింది.

దానికి విక్రమార్కుడు, “చదరంగంలో తను చంద్రరేఖకు సరిజోడుకాదని సూర్యతేజ, మొదటి ఆటలో ఓడినప్పుడే గ్రహించలేనంత మూర్ఖుడు కాదు. అయినా రెండవసారి, మూడవసారి ఆమెతో పోటీకి సిద్ధపడ్డాడంటే, అతడికి ఆమెపైగల గాఢమైన అనురాగాన్ని తెలియజేస్తుంది. ఈ సంగతి కుశాగ్రబుద్ధి గల చంద్రరేఖ గుర్తించడం ఏమీ కష్టం కాదు.
నిజానికి చంద్రరేఖ తన స్వయంవరానికంటూ నిర్వహించిన చదరంగం పోటీ ఒక సాకు మాత్రమే. మూడు అంచెలుగా నిర్ణయించబడ్డ ఈ పోటీలో, సూర్యతేజ ఒక్కడే మొదటి రెండు అంచెలుదాటి, మూడవ అంచె పోటీకి తన ప్రాణాన్ని పణంగా పెట్టి సిద్ధపడ్డాడు. చంద్రరేఖ కోరుకున్నది సరిగ్గా అన్నిటా యోగ్యుడైన ఇటువంటి భర్తనే.

(A Tale from the Bethala Stories)
Long ago, in the kingdom of Kanakapuri, there lived a king
named Jayaketana. His daughter, Princess Chandrrekha, was very beautiful
and extremely intelligent. She was especially skilled at playing chess. Since
childhood, her father had trained her well, and she became a master of the
game.
When it was time for her marriage, Chandrrekha made a
surprising announcement.
She said,
“Father, I will marry only the prince who can defeat me in chess. If a prince
loses the first game, he must take one hundred lashes. If he loses the second
time, he must promise never to marry anyone else. If he loses the third time,
he must face death.”
The king was shocked by these strict rules. But knowing his
daughter’s strong will, he agreed.
Many Princes Fail
Many princes came, hoping to marry the beautiful
Chandrrekha. They were good at chess—but not as good as her. One by one, they
lost quickly and returned to their kingdoms in shame. None of them dared to
play a second time.
Prince Suryateja’s Determination
In another kingdom called Charusheela, there lived Prince
Suryateja. When he heard about Chandrrekha’s beauty and her strange
challenge, he decided to try.
The problem was—he did not even know how to play chess!
So he found a skilled teacher named Vishwanatha and
practiced very hard for six months. He trained day and night until he became
confident.
Finally, he traveled to Kanakapuri to challenge the
princess.
The First Game
The chess match began in the royal court. When Suryateja saw
Chandrrekha for the first time, he was amazed by her beauty.
They played seriously. Suryateja tried his best, but
Chandrrekha’s skill was extraordinary. After some time, she defeated him.
Everyone cheered for the princess. Soldiers stepped forward
to give him punishment.
But instead of leaving, Suryateja said he wanted to play
again!

The Second Game
The minister warned him,
“If you lose again, you must promise never to marry anyone else.”
Suryateja calmly agreed and took the oath.
The second game began. He played with full concentration.
Still, Chandrrekha was faster and smarter. For just a moment, Suryateja got
distracted by her beauty and made a small mistake. That one mistake cost him
the game.
He lost again.
Now everyone thought he would return home. But to everyone’s
surprise, he asked to play a third time—even though losing would mean death!
A Wise Decision
King Jayaketana advised him,
“You are young and brave. Do not risk your life.”
But Suryateja smiled and said,
“Victory and defeat are in God’s hands. I must try.”
Chandrrekha watched him carefully. She understood something
important. This prince was not foolish. He knew he might lose. Yet he was ready
to risk his life because he truly cared for her.
She realized that courage, determination, and deep love were
greater qualities than just winning a chess game.
Before the third match began, she lowered her head and said,
“Father, I accept defeat.”
Everyone was shocked.
But the king understood. He smiled and said,
“You have made the right decision at the right time.”
Chandrrekha and Suryateja were married.
