పట్టువదలని విక్రమార్కుడు చెట్టు వద్దకు తిరిగి వెళ్లి, చెట్టుపై నుంచి శవాన్ని దించి భుజాన వేసుకుని, ఎప్పటిలాగే మౌనంగా శ్మశానం కేసి నడవ సాగాడు. అప్పుడు శవంలోని బేతాళుడు, “రాజా, ఒక దేశపాలకుడుగా, నీకున్న కీర్తి ప్రతిష్ఠలేమిటో నాకు తెలియవు. రాజైనవాడికి ధర్మ గుణం, పరాక్రమం, తెలివితేటలూ వున్నంత మాత్రాన చాలదు. వాటికి తోడు సూక్ష్మ బుద్ధీ , మనోస్థైర్యం అవసరం.
ఆ రెండూ నీలో లోపించిన కారణంగానే, ఈ అర్థరాత్రి వేళ ఎదో అసాధ్యమైన కార్యాన్ని సాధించబూని, ఈ శ్మశానంలో తిరుగుతున్నావని, నాకు అనుమానం కలుగుతున్నది. రాజు మాధవసేనుడి లాగా, కొందరు తాము చేయని నేరానికీ, పాపానికీ తమకుతామే శిక్ష విధించుకుంటారు. ఇందుకు కారణం సూక్ష్మ బుద్ధీ, మనోస్థైర్యం లేకపోవడం. నీకు శ్రమ తెలియకుండా ఉండేందుకు అతడి కథ చెబుతాను, విను.” అంటూ ఇలా చెప్పసాగాడు :

ఒకానొకప్పుడు కొసలదేశాన్ని, మాధవసేనుడనే రాజు పరిపాలించేవాడు. ఆయన ప్రజలను కన్నబిడ్డల్లా చూసుకునే వాడు. ప్రజాక్షేమాన్ని కాంక్షించడంలో ముల్లోకాలలోను ఆయనకు ఆయనే సాటి అని పేరు వచ్చింది.
ఇలా ఉండగా — కొసలదేశంలో అగ్నినేత్రుడనే మాంత్రికుడు ప్రవేశించాడు. వాడు క్షుద్రవిద్యలతో సామాన్య పౌరులను భయపెట్టి తన పనులు చక్కబెట్టుకోసాగాడు. ఆవిధంగా వాడొక పెద్ద భవనం నిర్మించుకుని, సకలసదుపాయాలతో, సుఖంగా జీవిస్తూ ప్రజలను వేధించసాగాడు. ప్రజలకు వాడంటే విపరీతమైన భయం. అందుచేత , ఎవరూ వాడిని గురించి రాజుకు ఫిర్యాదు చేయలేదు.
గూఢచారుల ద్వారా మాధవసేనుడికి, అగ్నినేత్రుణ్ణి గురించి తెలిసింది. అయన వెంటనే కబురు పంపి వాణ్ణి కొలువుకు రప్పించాడు.
అగ్నినేత్రుడు, మాధవసేనుడికి సవినయంగా నమస్కరించి, “నీ రాజ్యం లో ప్రజలూ , నేను కూడా ఎంతో సుఖంగా జీవిస్తున్నాం. నీకు నా వందనాలు.” అన్నాడు.
మాధవసేనుడు శాంతంగా, “నీ వినయం నాకు సంతోషాన్ని కలిగించింది. నువ్వు వెంటనే, నా రాజ్యం వదిలి వెళ్ళిపోతే నేనింకా సంతోషిస్తాను.” అన్నాడు.
“నావంటి మహా మాంత్రికుడు ఏ దేశంలో ఉంటే, ఆ దేశానికి ఎంతో గౌరవం. నన్ను నీవు పొమ్మనడానికి కారణం ఏమిటి ?” అని అడిగాడు అగ్నినేత్రుడు.
“నీ బుద్ధి మంచిది కాదు. నువ్వు స్వార్థపరుడివి. నా రాజ్యంలో నీవంటి వారికి స్థానం లేదు. నువ్వు నీ దుష్టశక్తులతో సామాన్యులను బాధించి, వేధించి సుఖాలు అనుభవిస్తున్నావు.” అన్నాడు మాధవసేనుడు.
దీనికి బదులుగా అగ్నినేత్రుడుపెద్దగా నవ్వి, “శక్తిమంతుడు, శక్తిహీనుడి కంటే ఏక్కువ సుఖపడడం ఏ దేశంలోనైనా జరిగేదే! నువ్వు విధించే పన్నులు ప్రజలు సంతోషంగా చెల్లిస్తున్నారంటావా? నీ శాసనాలన్నీ వాళ్లకు నచ్చుతున్నాయంటావా?
ప్రజలు నా మీద ఫిర్యాదు చేయడం లేదు కాబట్టి, నేనూ మంచి వాణ్ణే! ఇక స్వార్థం అంటావా? ప్రజలకంటే ఎక్కువ వైభవంగా జీవిస్తూ సుఖపడుతున్న నువ్వు మాత్రం, స్వార్థపరుడివి కాదా? అందుకని నువ్వు దేశం వదిలి పోతావా?” అని ప్రశ్నించాడు.
“రాజా భవనాల్లో నివసించడంలో సంప్రదాయం తప్ప, ఎక్కువ సుఖం లేదు. నేను స్వార్థపరుడినని నువ్వు రుజువు చేస్తే, నేను ఈ క్షణమే రాజ్యం వదిలిపోతాను!” అన్నాడు మాధవసేనుడు.
అగ్నినేత్రుడు వికటాట్టహాసం చేసి, “నీతో నాకు వాదనలేమిటి? అకారణంగా నన్ను రాజ్యం వదిలిపోమన్నావు. నేను నీ కుమార్తెను, నాతో తీసుకుపోతాను. ఎం చేయగలవో చేయి.” అంటూ అక్కణ్ణుంచి మాయమయ్యాడు.
అంతే! అదే సమయంలో మాధవసేనుడి ఏకైకపుత్రిక మాధవీలత, అంతఃపురం నుంచి మాయమయ్యింది.

మహారాజు మాధవసేనుడికి ఏం చేయాలో పాలుబోలేదు. అప్పుడు మంత్రి ఆయనతో, “ప్రభూ ! మాధవీలతకు తగిన వరుణ్ణి ఎన్నిక చేయాలనుకుంటున్నారు కదా! ఇప్పుడు దీన్నొక అవకాశంగా తీసుకుందాం. ఏ వీరుడు మాంత్రికుణ్ణి చంపి రాజకుమారిని రక్షిస్తాడో , ఆ వీరుడికి మీరు రాజ్యాన్ని, యువరాణిని కూడా సమర్పించవచ్చు.” అన్నాడు.
మాధవసేనుడు చేసేది లేక ఇందుకు అంగీకరించాడు. వెంటనే రాజ్యంలో, ఆ విధంగా చాటింపు వేయబడింది. రాజ కుమార్తెనూ, రాజ్యాన్ని తమదిగా చేసుకోవాలని ఎందరో యువకులు ఉత్సాహంగా బయల్దేరారు.
అప్పుడు దేవి ప్రత్యక్షమై, “రాజా, నిన్ను కొన్ని దివ్యశక్తులు పరీక్షకు గురి చేస్తున్నాయి. దిగులు పడకు. నేను నీకొక ఖడ్గాన్ని యిస్తున్నాను. అది తాకగానే దుష్టశక్తి ఎంత బలమైనదైన బూడిదగా మారిపోతుంది.” అని ఒక ఖడ్గాన్ని ఆయనకిచ్చి మాయమయ్యింది.

మాధవసేనుడు ఆ ఖడ్గాన్ని ఒరలో ఉంచుకొని, ఆ రాత్రికి సుఖంగా నిద్రపోయాడు. ఆలా వరం రోజులు గడిచే సరికి, ఒక రోజున మాధవీలత అపూర్వ తేజంతో విరాజిల్లే అందమైన యువకుడితో తిరిగి వచ్చింది.
ఆ యువకుడు మాధవసేనుడుకి వంగి నమస్కరించి, “నేను అగ్నినేత్రణ్ణి చంపి, మాధవీలతను రక్షించి తీసుకువచ్చాను. నా పేరు అగ్నిసేనుడు. మా పూర్వీకులు విదేహరాజ్యాన్నేలేరని చెప్పుకుంటారు.” అని తన గురించి చెప్పుకున్నాడు.

మాధవసేనుడు మారు మాట్లాడకుండా, తన ఒరలోంచి కత్తి దూసి,అగ్నిసేనుణ్ణి తీవ్రంగా తాకాడు. ఆయన ఈ విపరీత ప్రవర్తనకు చుట్టూ వున్నవారు మాధవీలతతో సహా అందరు ఆశ్చర్యపోయారు. అగ్నిసేనుడికి రవంత గాయం కూడా కాలేదు. అతడు నవ్వుతూ నిలబడ్డాడు.
మాధవసేనుడు మారు మాట్లాడకుండా అక్కణ్ణించి వెళ్ళిపోయాడు. అగ్నిసేనుడికీ మాధవీలతకూ వివాహం జరిగింది.
వివాహానంతరం అగ్నిసేనుడికి రాజ్యాభిషేకం జరిగింది. అప్పుడు అగ్నిసేనుడి రూపం లో ఉన్నట్లుండి అగ్నినేత్ర మాంత్రికుడిగా మారిపోయింది. వాడు నవ్వుతూ, “యువరాణిని నేను వివాహమాడాలనుకున్నాను. ఈ దేశానికి రాజును కావాలని కలకన్నాను. ఈ రెండు కోర్కెలూ తీర్చుకునేందుకు, నా శక్తుల్ని ఉపయోగించుకున్నాను. ముందు మాధవీలతను అపహరించాను. ” అన్నాడు.
మాధవసేనుడు కొంచెంసేపు ఆలోచిస్తూ వూరుకుని, “అగ్నిసేనా, నువ్వు మాములు క్షత్రియ యువకుడివి, నన్ను పరీక్షించడానికి, ఏవో దివ్యశక్తులు నిన్ను ఉపయోగించుకున్నాయి. మాంత్రిక వేషంతో ఎవరిని భయపెట్టకు. కోసలకు ప్రభువుగా చక్కని రాజ్యపాలన చెయ్యి. ఈ పరీక్షలో నేనోడిపోయాను. పాపపరిహారార్థం నేను కొంత కాలం వనవాసానికి వెళ్లి తపస్సు చేసుకుని వస్తాను.” అని అక్కడి నుంచి వెళ్ళిపోయాడు.
ఆ మరుక్షణం మాంత్రికుడు రూపంలో ఉన్నవాడికి, ఆ రూపం పోయి అగ్నిసేనుడుగా మారిపోయాడు.
బేతాళుడు ఈ కథ చెప్పి, “రాజా,మాధవసేనుడు తాను పాపం చేశానంటూ వనవాసానికి పోవడం, అర్థం లేని పని కాదా? అతడు ప్రజల్ని కన్నబిడ్డల్లా పాలించాడు. వాళ్లకు మరొక మంచి ప్రభువునిచ్చాడు. ఇన్ని చేసి, అతడు పాపపరిహారం, తపస్సూ అదనడం , బుద్ధి లోపం, మనోస్థైర్యం కోల్పోవడం వల్లనే, కదా? ఈ సందేహానికి సమాధానం తెలిసి కూడా చెప్పకపోయావో, నీ తలా పగిలి పోతుంది.” అన్నాడు.
దానికి విక్రమార్కుడు, “మాధవసేనుడు తాను పాపం చేశాననడం, నువ్వు చెప్పిన కారణం వాల్ల కాదు. అతడు పాపం చేసినమాట నిజం. రాజ్యం అతడి బాధ్యత తప్పితే సొంత ఆస్తి మాత్రం కాదు. సమర్థులకు మాత్రమే అప్పగించాలి. అసమర్థుడికో అప్పగిస్తే, అందువల్ల ప్రజలు నష్టాలకు గురవుతారు. ఇవన్నీ ఆలోచించక కన్నకూతురిపై మమకారంతో స్వార్థబుద్ధితో ఎవరు తన కుమార్తె ను రక్షిస్తే వారికి రాజ్యం కట్టబెడతాననడం, మాధవసేనుడు చేసిన మొదటి పాపం.
కులదేవత అద్భుతశక్తులగల ఖడ్గాన్నిచ్చి, దివ్యశక్తులు కొన్ని నిన్ను పరీక్షకు గురిచేస్తున్నావని అతణ్ణి హెచ్చరించింది. అయినా, మాధవసేనుడు ఆ హెచ్చరికను తోసిపుచ్చి, అగ్నిసేనుడి మీద ఖడ్గాన్ని ప్రయోగించాడు. ఇది రెండవ పాపం. ఇవన్నీ గుర్తించే అతడు వనవాసానికి పోవడం జరిగింది.” అన్నాడు.
రాజుకు ఈ విధంగా మౌనభంగం కలుగగానే, బేతాళుడు శవంతో సహా మాయమై, తిరిగి చెట్టెక్కాడు.

The Test of Divine Powers
(A Story from the Bethala Tales)
King Vikramarka once again carried the silent corpse on his
shoulder and walked toward the cremation ground. Suddenly, the spirit inside
the body, the Bethala, began to speak.
“King, a ruler needs more than bravery, intelligence, and
fame. He must also have sharp judgment and strong mental strength. Let me tell
you a story about a king who lacked these for a moment.”
King Madhavasena
Long ago, there was a king named Madhavasena who
ruled the land of Kosala. He loved his people like his own children. Everyone
praised him as a just and kind ruler.
One day, a powerful magician named Agninetra entered
the kingdom. He used dark magic to frighten innocent people and built a grand
palace for himself. Out of fear, no one complained to the king.
But through his spies, King Madhavasena learned the truth.
He called Agninetra to his court and said,
“You must leave my kingdom. You are troubling my people.”
The magician laughed and argued,
“If you live in comfort as a king, why can’t I? If people do not complain about
me, how am I wrong?”
The king firmly replied,
“You misuse your powers and harm others. Leave at once.”
Angered, Agninetra said,
“Then I will take your daughter with me. Stop me if you can!”
In an instant, the king’s only daughter, Princess
Madhavilata, disappeared.
The Challenge
The king was helpless. His minister suggested,
“Announce that whoever rescues the princess and defeats the
magician will marry her and become king.”
The king agreed. Many brave young men set out to rescue her.
Meanwhile, King Madhavasena prayed to the Goddess in a
secret temple. The Goddess appeared and said,
“You are being tested. Take this divine sword. It can
destroy any evil power.”
The king kept the sword safely.

The Return
After some days, Princess Madhavilata returned with a
handsome young warrior named Agnisena.
He bowed and said,
“I killed Agninetra and rescued the princess.”
Without saying a word, King Madhavasena took out the divine
sword and struck Agnisena. But nothing happened! Agnisena stood smiling.
Soon, Madhavilata married Agnisena, and he was crowned king.
Suddenly, Agnisena transformed into Agninetra, the magician!
He laughed and said,
“I wanted to marry the princess and become king. So I used
my magic to trick everyone.”
King Madhavasena thought deeply and said,
“No. You are not truly evil. This was a divine test. I made
mistakes. I will go to the forest and perform penance to atone for them.”
As soon as he said this, the magician’s false form
disappeared, and Agnisena stood there as a normal warrior again.
The Question
The Bethala then asked,
“Why did King Madhavasena blame himself and go to the
forest? Was he weak-minded?”
Vikramarka’s Answer
King Vikramarka replied,
“Madhavasena was not weak. But he made two mistakes.
First, he promised to give his entire kingdom to anyone who
rescued his daughter. A kingdom is not personal property. It belongs to the
people. A ruler must choose the next king wisely, not emotionally.
Second, even after the Goddess warned him that he was being
tested, he attacked Agnisena without thinking carefully.
Realizing these mistakes, he chose to do penance. That shows
responsibility, not weakness.”
As soon as Vikramarka finished speaking, the Bethala
disappeared again and flew back to the tree.
Moral of the Story
- A
ruler must think carefully before making big decisions.
- Power
should never be used emotionally.
- Accepting
one’s mistakes and correcting them shows true greatness.
