అది ఒక మారుమూల గ్రామం. అక్కడ నుండి పట్నం వెళ్ళాలంటే ఎన్ని రోజులైనా కాలి నడకన పోవల్సిందే మరి! అలాంటి మారుమూల గ్రామంలో ఉండేవాడు అంజి. 

చిన్నతనం లోనే అతని తల్లిదండ్రులు చనిపోయారు. అప్పటినుండీ తినటానికి తిండి లేక, బ్రతుకు బండిని తోసుకు పోలేక అతను నానా కష్టాలు పడ్డాడు. అలాంటి పరిస్థితుల్లో అతనికి పవన్ అనే పిల్లవాడు పరిచయం అయ్యాడు.

పవన్ వాళ్ళ నాన్న ఆ ఊరిలోకెల్లా ధనవంతుడు. అయినా పవన్‌కు రవంతైనా గర్వం ఉండేది కాదు. అంతేకాక అతనిది చాలా జాలిగుండె కూడా. పవన్ కు అంజిని చూస్తే జాలి అనిపించింది. 

అంజి వేసుకునేందుకు బట్టలు, తినేందుకు ఆహారం, స్కూలు ఫీజులకు డబ్బులు- ఇవన్నీ ఇచ్చి ఆదుకున్నాడు. పవన్ వాళ్ళ అమ్మ-నాన్న కూడా దీనికి అడ్డుచెప్పలేదు. పవన్ చేసే మంచి పనులను వాళ్ళూ ప్రోత్సహించేవాళ్లు.

ఒకసారి కనీస అవసరాలు తీరాక, అంజి తప్పుదారులు తొక్కటం మొదలు పెట్టాడు. చెడు స్నేహాలు మొదలయ్యాయి. క్రమంగా దొంగతనం కూడా అలవడింది. అది పవన్‌కు నచ్చలేదు. దాంతో వాళ్ళిద్దరికీ పోట్లాటలు మొదలయ్యాయి. పవన్‌ అంజితో మాట్లాడటం మానేశాడు.

మొదట్లో ఆ సంగతిని అంజి కూడా పట్టించుకోలేదు. అయితే చెడు స్నేహాలు మప్పిన వాళ్ళంతా రాను రాను ముఖం చాటు చేశారు. దొంగతనాలు తనకు తిండి పెట్టవని అంజికి త్వరలోనే తెలిసి వచ్చింది. కానీ ఇప్పుడు ఆ సంగతిని గుర్తించీ ఏమి ప్రయోజనం? 

పవన్‌కి ముఖం చూపించాలంటే కూడా సిగ్గు వేసింది అంజికి. దాంతోబాటు తిండి తిప్పలకూ కష్టమైంది మళ్ళీ. అందుకని అంజి ఆ ఊరిని వదిలి, దగ్గరలోనే ఉన్న మరో ఊరికి వలస వెళ్ళిపోయాడు. అతని అదృష్టంకొద్దీ ఆ ఊళ్ళో ప్రభుత్వ బడి, ప్రభుత్వ వసతి గృహం చక్కగా పనిచేసేవి! అట్లా అంజికి చదువుకునేందుకు కనీస వసతులు లభించాయి.

దురలవాట్లనుండి దూరంగా ఉండాలని నిశ్చయించుకున్నాడు గనక, ఇప్పుడు అతను మానసికంగా గట్టి పడ్డాడు కూడాను. దాంతో అంతవరకూ బయటపడని అతని తెలివి తేటలు బయటపడటమూ మొదలైంది! సంవత్సరం తిరిగే సరికి, ఆ ఊళ్ళో అందరిలోకీ చక్కగా చదివే పిల్లవాడుగా పేరు తెచ్చుకున్నాడు అంజి.

అలా ఉండగా ఒకసారి ఆ ఊరికి జిల్లా కలెక్టర్ గారు వచ్చారు. కలెక్టర్ గారి మాటలు అంజికి బాగా నచ్చాయి. "బాగా చదువుకుంటే నేను కూడా కలెక్టరును కావచ్చు. నేను కలెక్టరునై మన దేశంలో అసలు పేదరికం అన్నదే లేకుండా చేస్తాను" అని, అంజి మరింత పట్టుదలతో చదవసాగాడు.

పదవ తరగతిలో మంచిమార్కులతో పాసైన అంజికి పై చదువులు ఉచితంగా చదువుకునేందుకు తగిన స్కాలర్షిప్పులు దొరికాయి. 


ఇక అతను ఆ పైన దేశం మొత్తానికీ‌ పేరెన్నిక గన్న విశ్వవిద్యాలయాల్లో చదివి, గొప్ప అర్హతలు సంపాదించు-కున్నాడు. చివరికి అంజి, తన చిరకాల స్వప్నమైన ఐఏఎస్‌ను సాధించగలిగాడు కూడా. అలా తను పుట్టిన జిల్లాకే అంజి కలెక్టరుగా వచ్చాడు.

ఆ సరికి పవన్ కూడా పెద్దయ్యాడు. తన ఆస్తినంతా వాడి, ఒక చక్కని స్వచ్ఛంద సంస్థను నెలకొల్పిన పవన్, తన ఊరికి, పర్యావరణానికి మేలు చేసే పనులు అనేకం చేపట్టి ఉన్నాడు. కొత్త కలెక్టరు గారు తన బాల్య స్నేహితుడైన అంజే అని తెలిసినప్పటికీ‌ అతను నిర్లిప్తంగానే ఉండిపోయాడు తప్ప, వెళ్ళి అంజిని కలవలేదు. 

బాధ్యతలు చేపట్టిన కొన్ని నాళ్ళకు అంజి 'త్రాగునీటి సౌకర్యం' కార్యక్రమం సందర్భంగా తను పుట్టిన ఊరికి వెళ్ళాడు. గ్రామంలోని ప్రజలంతా అతన్ని చూసి "ఓరి ఓరి! ఎంత పెద్దోడివైనావు" అన్నారు సంతోషంగా. 

కానీ అంజి కళ్ళు మాత్రం పవన్ కోసం వెతికాయి. ఎక్కడా పవన్ జాడలేదు! చివరికి ఉండబట్టలేక, కలెక్టరు గారు అంజిని వెతుక్కుంటూ వాళ్ళ ఇంటికి వెళ్ళారు.

అక్కడ పవన్ కూర్చొని తన పని తాను చేసుకుంటూ ఉన్నాడు. అంజి వెళ్ళి అతన్ని ఆప్యాయంగా పలకరించి, "నువ్వెందుకు, ఇంకా నన్ను శిక్షిస్తున్నావు? నేను ఆనాటి చెడ్డ అంజిని కాదు. నువ్వు నన్ను విడచిన కొన్నాళ్ళకే నా కళ్ళు తెరచుకున్నాయి. అప్పటినుండీ నీ చలవ వల్ల, మంచి మార్గంలోనే నడిచాను. 

నువ్వు మంచి సామాజిక కార్యకర్తవని విన్నాను- ఇప్పటికైనా, నీకు అభ్యంతరం లేకపోతే, మనం కలసి పనిచేద్దాం. మన దేశంలో పేదరికం అన్నదే లేకుండా చేద్దాం. మన గ్రామం నుండే మన పనిని ప్రారంభిద్దాం " అన్నాడు.

అప్పటి వరకూ అంజిని దూరంగా ఉంచిన పవన్ లేచి నిలబడి అతన్ని దగ్గరకు తీసుకున్నాడు. అక్కడే నిలబడి చూస్తున్న కోడిపుంజు 'కొక్కొరొకో' అని అరిచింది.
