A Vikram and Betal Story
The determined King Vikram went back to the tree once again.
He climbed up, brought down the dead body, placed it on his shoulder, and
started walking silently through the cremation ground.

“King, this is such a difficult task. Why are you working so
hard?
What will you gain if you succeed?
Wealth?
Fame?
Or both?
It is very rare for one person to truly deserve both wealth
and fame. Let me tell you a story about two great poets. Listen carefully!”
📖 The Two Poets
Long ago, in the city of Pataliputra, there lived a
king named Mahasara, who loved literature.
A poet named Prasanna came to the city. He wanted to recite
his poetry in the royal court and earn the king’s support.
But the palace guards would not allow him to meet the king.
One day, Prasanna sadly shared his problem with a jewel
merchant.
The merchant said,
“I understand jewels, not poetry. If you want to see the king, maybe you should
bribe the guards.”
Hearing this, Prasanna became angry and immediately recited
a poem.
The meaning of the poem was:
“If a king listens only to poets who bribe guards, then it
is better that he never hears my poetry.”
✨ The Court Poet
At that moment, a great poet named Devidasa was in the shop.
He was the royal court poet. People said that when he spoke, it was as if the
Goddess of Knowledge herself was speaking.
Devidasa heard Prasanna’s poem and was impressed.
He told him kindly,
“If you wish to meet the king, you should seek the help of the court poets, not
bribe the guards.”
Prasanna replied with another poem, suggesting that court
poets might block talented newcomers out of fear.
Instead of feeling angry, Devidasa smiled and took Prasanna
to the king.
King Mahasara listened to Prasanna’s poetry and liked it
very much. He gave Prasanna a place among his court poets.
📚 A Big Responsibility
After some time, religious conflicts started among the
people. They were divided and fighting among themselves.
The king wanted to bring peace.
His minister suggested:
“Your Majesty, if someone explains the teachings of the
Vedas in simple language, people may understand that God is one, and peace will
return.”
The king thought Devidasa was perfect for this task.
But the minister said,
“Prasanna is also talented. Give the responsibility to both poets.”
The king agreed.
He announced:
“Whoever completes the best poem explaining the essence of
the Vedas will receive a grand reward of one lakh gold coins!”
🖋️ The Writing Begins
Devidasa was a great scholar in Sanskrit. He worked quickly
and completed his poem even before the deadline.
Prasanna, however, was not as skilled in Sanskrit. He humbly
consulted many scholars, understood the meaning carefully, and then began
writing. It took him longer.
Devidasa secretly waited until Prasanna also finished. Then
he told the king:
“We both completed our poems at the same time. Please choose
the better one.”
The king now faced a problem. Who could judge fairly?
Just then, a wise scholar named Chiranjeevi arrived in the
city. He was invited to judge the competition.
After reading both poems carefully, Chiranjeevi said:
“Both poems are excellent. Both poets deserve the reward.”
😮 The Argument
But Devidasa spoke proudly:
“My poem is entirely my own work. I completed it earlier.
Prasanna took help from others. Do not forget that before giving the reward.”
Chiranjeevi was surprised.
“You completed such a great work alone in just six weeks?”
“Yes,” said Devidasa proudly. “I have even translated great
epics before!”
Then Chiranjeevi asked Prasanna for his opinion.
Prasanna humbly replied:
“I am not as learned as Devidasa. I only wanted to help the
people understand the truth. If my poem is equal to his, I feel honored.
Devidasa is like a teacher to me.”
Hearing this, Chiranjeevi made his decision.
The entire reward was given to Prasanna.
👑 Betal’s Question
After finishing the story, Betal asked:
“King Vikram! Was this fair? Devidasa was the greater
scholar. Why did Chiranjeevi favor Prasanna? If you know the answer and remain
silent, your head will break!”
🧠 Vikram’s Answer
King Vikram replied:
“There is no doubt that Devidasa is a great poet. But in
this competition, both poems were equal.
However, Devidasa showed pride and arrogance. He wanted fame
and wealth badly. Pride leads to downfall.
Prasanna, on the other hand, showed humility. A humble
person can grow even greater.
When two people are equal in talent, the one with humility
deserves encouragement. That is why Chiranjeevi gave the reward to Prasanna.
There was no partiality in his decision.”
As soon as Vikram broke his silence, Betal laughed loudly
and flew back to the tree with the dead body.
And poor Vikram had to go back once again!

ఎప్పటిలాగే నిశ్శబ్దంగా శ్మశానంలో నడవసాగాడు.
అప్పుడే శవంలోని బేతాళుడు మాట్లాడాడు:
“రాజా! ఇంత కష్టమైన పనిని ఎందుకు చేస్తున్నావు?
ఇది పూర్తయ్యాక నీకు ఏమి దక్కుతుంది?
ధనమా?
కీర్తియా?
లేదా రెండూ?
ఒకేసారి ధనం, కీర్తి రెండింటికీ అర్హులు కావడం చాలా అరుదు. ఈ విషయం అర్థం చేసుకోవడానికి ఇద్దరు కవుల కథ చెబుతాను. విను!”
📖 ఇద్దరు కవులు
పాటలీపుత్రం అనే నగరంలో మహాసారుడు అనే రాజు ఉండేవాడు. ఆయనకు సాహిత్యం అంటే చాలా ఇష్టం.
ఒకరోజు ప్రసన్నుడు అనే కవి ఆ నగరానికి వచ్చాడు. తన కవిత్వం రాజుకి వినిపించి రాజాశ్రయం పొందాలని అతని కోరిక.
కానీ రాజభటులు అతన్ని లోపలికి అనుమతించలేదు.
ఒకరోజు బాధతో ఒక రత్నాల వ్యాపారికి తన సమస్య చెప్పాడు.
వ్యాపారి,
“రాజును కలవాలంటే భటులకు లంచం ఇవ్వాలి” అన్నాడు.
అది విని ప్రసన్నుడు కోపంతో ఒక పద్యం చెప్పాడు.
ఆ పద్యార్థం ఏమిటంటే —
“లంచం ఇచ్చిన కవుల కవిత్వం వినే రాజు నా కవిత్వం వినకపోవడమే మంచిది.”
✨ దేవీదాసు ప్రవేశం
అదే సమయంలో అక్కడ దేవీదాసు అనే రాజాస్థాన కవి ఉన్నాడు.
ఆయన చాలా గొప్ప పండితుడు.
ప్రసన్నుడి పద్యం విని దేవీదాసు సంతోషించాడు.
“రాజును కలవాలంటే భటులను కాదు,
ఆస్థాన కవులను ఆశ్రయించాలి” అన్నాడు.
అతడు ప్రసన్నుడిని రాజు దగ్గరకు తీసుకెళ్లాడు.
రాజు ప్రసన్నుడి కవిత్వం విని మెచ్చి, ఆస్థాన కవుల్లో ఒకడిగా నియమించాడు.
📚 గొప్ప బాధ్యత
కొంతకాలానికి దేశంలో మతకలహాలు మొదలయ్యాయి. ప్రజలు విడిపోయి గొడవలు చేసుకుంటున్నారు.
రాజు శాంతి కోసం మార్గం వెతికాడు.
మంత్రి చెప్పాడు:
“వేదాల సారాన్ని సులభమైన భాషలో ప్రజలకు అర్థమయ్యేలా చెప్పాలి.”
రాజు ఈ పని దేవీదాసుకే ఇవ్వాలని అనుకున్నాడు.
కానీ మంత్రి ప్రసన్నుడినీ చేర్చమన్నాడు.
రాజు ఇద్దరికీ బాధ్యత అప్పగించి ఇలా చెప్పాడు:
“ఎవరి రచన ఉత్తమమో వారికి లక్ష వరహాల బహుమతి ఇస్తాను.”
✍️ రచన ప్రారంభం
దేవీదాసు సంస్కృతంలో మహాపండితుడు. త్వరగా తన రచన పూర్తిచేశాడు.
ప్రసన్నుడు మాత్రం వినయంతో పండితులను సంప్రదించి, అర్థం చేసుకుని రచన చేశాడు. అందుకే అతనికి ఎక్కువ సమయం పట్టింది.
ఇద్దరూ రచనలు పూర్తిచేసి రాజు దగ్గరకు వెళ్లారు.
న్యాయనిర్ణేతగా చిరంజీవి అనే మహాపండితుడిని ఆహ్వానించారు.
చిరంజీవి రెండు రచనలు చదివి,
“రెండూ చాలా గొప్పవే. ఇద్దరూ బహుమతికి అర్హులు” అన్నాడు.
😮 గర్వం vs వినయం
దేవీదాసు గర్వంగా అన్నాడు:
“నేను నా ప్రతిభతోనే రాశాను. ముందే పూర్తిచేశాను. ప్రసన్నుడు ఇతరుల సహాయం తీసుకున్నాడు.”
అప్పుడు చిరంజీవి ప్రసన్నుడిని అడిగాడు.
ప్రసన్నుడు వినయంగా చెప్పాడు:
“నాకు దేవీదాసులా పాండిత్యం లేదు. ప్రజలకు ఉపయోగపడాలని మాత్రమే రాశాను. నా రచన ఆయనదానికి సమానమైతే,
అది నాకు గౌరవం.”
చిరంజీవి నిర్ణయం తీసుకున్నాడు.
లక్ష వరహాల బహుమతి ప్రసన్నుడికి ఇచ్చాడు.
👑 బేతాళుడి ప్రశ్న
బేతాళుడు అడిగాడు:
“దేవీదాసు గొప్ప పండితుడు. అయినా బహుమతి ప్రసన్నుడికి ఎందుకు ఇచ్చారు? ఇది న్యాయమా?”
🧠 విక్రమార్కుడి సమాధానం
విక్రమార్కుడు అన్నాడు:
“దేవీదాసు గొప్ప కవి. కానీ అతనిలో గర్వం ఉంది. అతనికి కీర్తి, ధనం మీద ఆశ ఎక్కువ.
గర్వం ఉన్నవాడు దిగజారుతాడు.
ప్రసన్నుడిలో వినయం ఉంది. వినయం ఉన్నవాడు ఇంకా ఎదగగలడు.
ఇద్దరి ప్రతిభ సమానంగా ఉన్నప్పుడు, మంచి స్వభావం ఉన్నవారిని ప్రోత్సహించడం న్యాయం. అందుకే చిరంజీవి ప్రసన్నుడిని ఎంచుకున్నాడు.”
విక్రమార్కుడు ఇలా మాట్లాడగానే, బేతాళుడు మళ్లీ నవ్వుతూ చెట్టుమీదకు ఎగిరిపోయాడు!

King Vijayendra listened carefully.

himself.
At first, the demon roared angrily. But the king did not

He tried to understand why the demon was angry.
Slowly, the demon’s heart began to change.
He realized his mistake.
