గురువు గారి కాలికి ముల్లు గుచ్చుకోవడం
గురువుగారు తరచు గ్రామాలకు తిరుగుతూ, తన కుటుంబానికీ, తన కుటుంబసభ్యులుగా మెలుగుతున్న శిష్యబృందానికీ సరిపడా సంభారాలు సమకూర్చడంలో నిమగ్నమయ్యారు. దానిక్కారణం రానున్నది అసలే వర్షాకాలం. వాగులూ-వంకలూ పొంగిపొర్లి ప్రవహిస్తుంటాయి. చినుకు పడితే చాలు రహదార్లన్నీ చిత్తడినేలలుగా మారిపోతాయి. అడుగు తీసి అడుగేస్తే మోకాల్లోతు బురదలో దిగిపోవాల్సిందే! అందుకని ఆషాఢ మాసమంతా పరమానందయ్యగారీ సేకరణల పనిలోనే నిమగ్నమయ్యారు.
పొరుగున ఉన్న కమలాపురాన్నుంచి ఓరోజు సాయంత్రం శిష్యులతో కలసి కనుఛీకటి పడేవేళ ఇంటికి తిరిగొస్తుండగా ఆయన కాల్లో ముల్లు విరిగింది.
గురువుగారు అక్కడే చతికిలబడి “అబ్బా!... దీని సిగ్గొయ్య! ఈ ముల్లు ఇప్పుడే దిగాలా? ఓ పక్కపొద్దుపోతోంది. ఇంటికి చేరేవరకైనా ఆగొద్దా?” అంటూ ఆపసోపాలూ పడసాగారు.
“అయితే గురువుగారూ! ఇంటికి చేరేవరకూ ఆగితే ముల్లు దిగినా ఫర్వాలేదంటారా?” అని 'ప్రశ్నించాడో శిష్యుడు.
“ఉష్! గురువుగారొక పక్క కాల్లో ముల్లుదిగి బాధపడుతుంటే, ఆయన్ని ఇప్పుడే సందేహాలడిగి చంపుతావా చవటా! ముందు ముల్లు తీసే మార్గం చూడవలసిన బాధ్యత మనందరి మీదా ఉంది” అని గురువుగారి ప్రియ శిష్యుడు దేవభూతి అతడ్ని మందలించాడు.
పరమానందయ్యగారు. అలా చెప్పిన శిష్యుడివైపు ప్రశంసగా చూసేసరికి ప్రతి శిష్యుడూ గురువుగారి మెప్పు పొందాలని నేను ముల్లు తీస్తానంటే నేను ముల్లు తీస్తా... అంటూ వాదులాడుకో సాగారు.
సూదికోసం దుకాణానికి వెళ్ళారు. కోమటి సూదిని ఇచ్చాడు. ఏది చేసినా అంతా ఐకమత్యంగా చెయ్యాలని కదా గురువుగారు చెప్పారు. కనుక సూదిని అందరం కలహించు కోకుండా, కలసి పట్టుకు వెళ్ళాలి.
ఎలా? అంటే ఎలా? అని తలా ఓ ఉపాయం ఆలోచించారు. అందరిలోనికీ దివ్యభూతి ఉపాయమే బాగా ఉన్నదనిపించింది. దాని ప్రకారం దగ్గర్లో ఉన్న కర్రల దుకాణానికి వెళ్ళగా, అతడు పరమానందయ్య శిష్యులను గుర్తుపట్టి “అయ్యలూ! ఏం కావాలి?” అంటూ ఆప్యాయంగా పలకరించాడు. తీరా విషయం విన్నాక వాళ్ళ అతి తెలివి తేటలకి నిర్దాంతపోయి గురువుగారి పట్ల గౌరవం కొద్దీ, అంతగా విలువ చెయ్యని తాటి దూలాన్ని ఒకదాన్ని తీసుకుపొమ్మన్నాడు.
అత్యంత జాగ్రత్తతో శిష్యులు ఆ దూలానికి సూది గుచ్చి, దాన్ని పదిమందీ మోసుకుంటూ తెచ్చి గురువు సన్నిధిని నిలబడ్డారు. పేరిందేవి కూడా వారి ఐకమత్యానికి మెచ్చి, రెండ్రోజులపాటు నీళ్ళు కాచుకోడానికి సరిపడ వంట చెరకు, తాటిదూలం రూపంలో మోసుకొచ్చిన శిష్యుల్ని ప్రశంసించింది.
“ఐకమత్యం అంటే మీదేనర్రా” అంటూ ఇటు పరమానందయ్య కూడా ప్రశంసించే సరికి, ఇక వారి ఆనందానికి పట్టపగ్గాల్లేకుండా పోయాయి. అందరూ గురువుగారికి కాల్లో విరిగిన ముల్లు తీద్దామని పోటీ పడేవారే!

చివరికి పరమానందయ్య గారి సలహా ప్రకారం వంతులు వేసుకుని ఒకరి తర్వాత ఒకరు సూది పుచ్చుకు గుచ్చడంతో, ముల్లు ఎప్పుడు బైటకు జారిపోయిందో తెలియదు గాని, గురువు గారికి ముల్లు గుచ్చుకున్న చోట అంగుళం మేర రంధ్రం పడి రక్తం కారసాగింది.
దాంతో ఆయనకి ప్రత్యక్ష నరకం కనిపించిన. శిష్యులను కసురుకొని వారించారు. అప్పటికీ చివరి ఇద్దరికీ గురువుగారి పాదం కెలికే అవకాశం చేజారిపోయింది.
“ఈసారి గురువు గారికి ముల్లు గుచ్చుకోదా? అప్పుడు మేమే ముందుగా ఆయన పాదం పనిపట్టక పోతామా?” అని ప్రమాణం చేసి మరీ అక్కడ్నుంచి కదిలారు వాళ్ళు.

When the Guru Stepped on a Thorn
A Comical Tale of Paramanandaiah and His Devoted
Disciples
The wise and ever-resourceful Paramanandaiah had been
unusually busy that season.
The monsoon was fast approaching. Once the rains began,
streams would overflow, pathways would turn into slush, and travel would become
nearly impossible. One heavy shower was enough to turn village roads into
knee-deep mud. So, throughout the month of Ashadha, the Guru went from village
to village gathering supplies — not just for his family, but also for his
devoted band of disciples, who lived with him like members of his own
household.
One evening, while returning from the neighboring village of
Kamalapuram, darkness began to settle. The group hurried along the narrow path
when suddenly

“Ayyo!” cried the Guru, collapsing onto a rock.
A sharp thorn had pierced his foot.
“Oh, what terrible timing!” he groaned. “Could this thorn
not wait until I reached home? Must it stab me right now, when it’s getting
dark?”
One disciple, ever literal, asked innocently,
“So, Guruvugaru… if it had waited until we reached home, would it have been
acceptable?”
Before the Guru could respond, his favorite disciple,
Devabhuti, scolded him sharply.
“Have you no sense? Our Guru is in pain and you choose this
moment to debate philosophy? Our duty now is to remove the thorn!”
The Guru cast an approving glance at Devabhuti. That one
look was enough.
Instantly, every disciple wanted to win the Guru’s praise.
“I will remove it!”
“No, I will!”
“Let me do it!”
What began as concern quickly turned into competition.
The Great Needle Mission
Someone suggested they fetch a needle to remove the thorn
carefully. Off they ran to a nearby shop, where the merchant handed them a
small sewing needle.
But there was a problem.
Their Guru had always taught them to do everything in unity.
No fighting. No arguing. Complete togetherness.
So how could just one person carry the needle?
After much serious discussion, one of them had a brilliant
idea.
They went to a timber yard nearby. The shopkeeper,
recognizing them instantly, asked politely, “What do you need today?”
When he heard their plan, he was stunned by their creativity
— or lack of it. Out of respect for the Guru, he handed them an old palm log
that wasn’t worth much.
The disciples carefully stuck the tiny needle into one end
of the large palm log.
Then, with great coordination and pride, all ten of them
lifted the heavy log onto their shoulders and marched back toward their Guru —
carrying one tiny needle like a royal treasure.
Even the Guru’s wife was impressed.
“What unity!” she exclaimed. “And look — you’ve even brought
firewood that will last us two days!”
When Paramanandaiah himself praised their teamwork,
their joy knew no bounds.

When Help Becomes Harm
Now came the serious task.
Following the Guru’s own advice, they decided to take turns.
Each disciple would carefully use the needle, one after another, to remove the
thorn.
One poked.
Then another.
And another.
By the time all of them had taken their turn, no one knew
when exactly the thorn had come out — but the Guru’s foot now had a hole nearly
an inch deep, and blood was flowing freely.
For poor Paramanandaiah, it was nothing short of living
hell.
“Stop! Stop immediately!” he cried, pulling his foot away.
Two disciples at the end of the line were heartbroken.
They had not yet gotten their turn.
“This time we missed the chance,” they muttered seriously.
“Next time Guru steps on a thorn, we will make sure we go first!”
And with that solemn vow, they helped him limp home.
Moral of the Story
Unity is powerful.
Obedience is admirable.
But without common sense, even good intentions can cause trouble.
Sometimes, helping wisely is far more important than helping
enthusiastically.
