Goodwill (Sadbhavana) – Moral Story for Kids:
Long before he was born as Siddhartha, the Bodhisattva once
lived as a sage named Sessendoji. In those days, everyone who sought liberation
studied sacred texts called Brahmanas and Aranyakas. Sessendoji
too studied all these scriptures carefully, lived a disciplined and virtuous
life, and gradually accumulated spiritual merit. By this point, he had
developed remarkable virtues, yet there were still deeper truths he had yet to
discover.
However, such profound truths don’t reveal themselves to
everyone. One must be qualified to perceive them. Indra, the king of the gods,
wanted to see if Sessendoji was ready.
One day, as Sessendoji went into the forest to gather grass,
a terrifying figure appeared before him—a Brahmarakshasa (a fearsome
demon).
“Ha! Ha! Ha!” laughed the demon. “You are Sessendoji, right?
I hear you seek perfect knowledge. Is it true?”
“Yes, it is!” replied Sessendoji.
“You’ve studied many scriptures, haven’t you? Tell me, can
you recite the one verse that directly reveals the ultimate truth?” challenged
the demon.
“I don’t know such a verse,” admitted Sessendoji humbly.
“Oh! You don’t even know the truth that I know?” the demon
teased, with a hint of mockery.
Sessendoji, showing respect and sincerity, said, “Even if
you reveal that verse, I will absorb its meaning and make my life worthwhile.”
“Very well, I will tell you a little. Listen carefully—what
I tell you is the ultimate truth, nothing else. Understand?” said the demon.
Sessendoji focused all his mind on the demon’s words.
“In this universe, everything is constantly changing.
Nothing remains permanent. This is the secret of birth and death,” the demon
began.
“Ah!” thought Sessendoji, eagerly awaiting the next part.
But the demon did not continue. Sessendoji waited patiently
and then requested, “Please tell me the second part.”
“Why should I tell you?” replied the demon, pretending to be
stubborn.
Sessendoji, feeling desperate, said, “I have sought this
truth for so long. I will give anything in return. Ask for whatever you wish!”
“Very well,” said the demon. “If I reveal the second part of
the verse, you must offer your body as my food.”
Sessendoji did not hesitate. “I will give it,” he promised.
“Then listen,” said the demon, “those who escape the cycle
of birth and death attain Nirvana.” And with that, the demon completed the
verse.
Sessendoji reflected deeply on the verse and its meaning.
With every contemplation, he felt he was touching even deeper truths. But now
he had to fulfill his promise and become the demon’s food. “What use is dying
immediately after learning such a great secret? I must spread this truth first.
Even if I am not fortunate enough to survive, if others benefit from this
knowledge, it is enough,” thought Sessendoji.
True to his word, he inscribed the verse on nearby trees and
stones. Then, climbing a tall tree, he prepared to leap into the demon’s mouth.
At that moment, Indra revealed his true form and held
Sessendoji safely. “To attain Nirvana, one must accumulate great merit. Your
selfless act—thinking not of yourself, but of benefiting others—proves your
worthiness. Because of this merit, in one of your future lives, you will surely
attain perfect enlightenment!”
And so, after many lifetimes, Siddhartha finally became the
Buddha.
Moral of the Story:
True goodwill and selflessness are the greatest virtues.
When we act for the benefit of others without selfish desire, we earn the merit
and wisdom that lead to ultimate enlightenment.
