Story for Kids
Early in the morning, the world was waking up as birds
chirped and fluttered about. Puja was reading her prayers when suddenly, two
sparrows flew into the balcony of her house. Puja’s attention shifted to the
birds just as her father came out onto the balcony.
Seeing the sparrows, he was reminded of his own childhood.
“There used to be so many sparrows in our village,” he said.
“People in the village would shake the millet and sorghum in their granaries
for the sparrows. Trees were full of birds, and all the village children would
climb the trees to watch them. It was a joy to see so many different kinds of
birds!”
Puja asked, “Even now, children go up trees like that,
right, Dad?”
“Like in those days? No one goes anymore!” her father
replied.
“Why? Why doesn’t anyone go?” Puja asked, surprised.
“There are many reasons, my dear. First, these days,
children don’t even get one hour of free time. They are kept busy with classes
and study schedules. When do they get to enjoy nature quietly?”
“Second, many of those birds have disappeared. The few that
remain hide themselves in corners, wherever they feel safe. There aren’t many
left,” he explained.
“Why did this happen, Dad?” Puja asked sadly.
“The main reason is the imbalance in our environment today.
Humans, driven by selfishness, are destroying nature. Many rare animals, birds,
and trees are disappearing. Among the birds that are vanishing quickly, these
little sparrows are among the first. Radiation from cell phone towers is
causing many village sparrows to die,” her father said.
“Not just that,” he continued. “Earlier, sparrows made their
nests in tree hollows, under roof eaves, and in holes built into walls. Now,
with concrete slab houses, these homes are no longer suitable for them. Their
survival is under threat!”
Hearing this, Puja felt very sad in her little heart. The
very next day, she made a small birdhouse out of sticks and tied it to the roof
of their balcony. The sparrows flew around the birdhouse daily but didn’t go
inside at first. Perhaps they thought it was a trap.
But slowly, they began to enter the birdhouse, spending the
night there and flying out again in the morning. Seeing this, Puja felt immense
joy.
“If only there were no harmful radiation! If our houses were
even a little more welcoming to sparrows, it would be wonderful,” she thought.
Moral of the Story:
Even small acts of kindness, like building a birdhouse, can
make a big difference. Caring for nature and the creatures around us helps
protect the environment and brings joy to both humans and animals.
