అందుకని మదకరి నాయకుడు కోట రక్షణకోసం అనేక అంచెల కావలి ఏర్పరచాడు. ఓబవ్వ భర్త కోట బురుజుకు కావలి. కోట దరిదాపుల్లోకి ఎవరైనా శత్రువులు వస్తే, శంఖం ఊది సైనికులను పిలవటం అతని పని.
అతను అలా శంఖం ఊదగానే ఇలా సైనికులు వచ్చి యుద్ధం చేసి శత్రువులను ఓడించేసేవాళ్ళు. అలా ఆమె భర్త పని ప్రమాదంతో కూడుకున్నది కాకపోయినా, బాధ్యతతో కూడుకున్న పని అన్నమాట. ఒకనాడు మధ్యాహ్నం ఓబవ్వ భర్త భోజనానికి ఇంటికి వచ్చాడు. భర్తకు భోజనం వడ్డించి, ఓబవ్వ నీళ్లకోసం చూసింది. చూడగా కడవలో నీళ్లు లేవు. బిందె తీసుకొని నీళ్లకు బయలుదేరిన ఓబవ్వ చెరువు దగ్గరికి చేరుకునేసరికి, ఘోరమైన ప్రమాదం ఒకటి ఆమె కంట పడింది.
కోట వెనుకవైపున గోడకు నేలబారున ఒక చిన్న రంధ్రం పడి ఉన్నది. ఆ రంధ్రంగుండా హైదరాలీ సైనికుడు ఒకడు కోటలోపలికి దూరుతున్నాడు. వాడి వెనుక ఇంకా చాలా మంది సైనికులే ఉండి ఉండాలి!
ఓబవ్వ బిందెను అక్కడే పడేసి భర్తను హెచ్చరించేందుకని ఇంటికి పరుగెత్తింది. భర్త ఇంట్లో నిదానంగా భోజనం చేస్తున్నాడు. అన్నం తింటున్న భర్తను తొందర పెట్టటం ఇష్టం కాలేదు ఓబవ్వకు. మరి ఏం చేయాలి? అతనికి ఏమీ చెప్పకుండానే పోయి, మూలగా ఉంచిన 'ఓనకే '(రోకలి బండ)ను చేత పుచ్చుకొని, కోట వెనుకవైపుకు పరుగుతీసింది ఓబవ్వ.
ఆ సమయానికే శత్రు సైనికుడు ఒకడు సన్నటి ఆ రంధ్రం లోంచి లోపలికి దూరుతున్నాడు. పరుగున అక్కడికి చేరుకున్న ఓబవ్వ, తన చేతిలో ఉన్న రోకలిబండతో వాడి నెత్తిన ఒక్కటిచ్చింది. వాడు దిమ్మెరపోగానే వాడిని లాగి లోపల పడేసింది. ఈ సంగతి తెలీని శత్రు సైనికులు ఒక్కరొక్కరే లోనికి దూరటం, ప్రక్కనే రుద్రమూర్తిలా నిలబడ్డ ఓబవ్వ వాళ్లను కొట్టి ఈడ్చి పడెయ్యటం జరుగుతూ పోయింది.
ఓబవ్వ భర్త భోజనం ముగించుకొని, లేచి వచ్చి చూస్తే ఓబవ్వ కనబడలేదు. అతను ఓబవ్వను వెతుక్కుంటూ చూసేసరికి, కోట వెనుక గోడకు రంధ్రం పడి ఉన్నది! గోడ వారగా నిలబడ్డ ఓబవ్వ రోకలిబండతో శత్రు సైనికుడొకణ్ణి చితక బాదు తున్నది. ఆమె వెనుక వందలాది మంది శత్రుసైనికులు కుప్పగా పడి ఉన్నారు!
అలికిడికి వెనక్కి తిరిగిన ఓబవ్వ భర్తను హెచ్చరించి, శంఖం ఊదమన్నది. అతను శంఖం ఊదగానే సైనికులు సచేతనమై పరుగున వచ్చారు. "వెళ్ళండి !మన రాజ్యాన్ని నాశనం చేసేందుకు వచ్చిన దుష్టులు ఇంకా ఎక్కడున్నారో వెతికి మట్టుపెట్టండి" అని అరిచింది ఓబవ్వ.
సైనికులు కోట రక్షణలో మునిగారు. అయితే అప్పటికే తప్పించుకున్న శత్రు సైనికుడొకడు వెనుకనుండి వచ్చి, ఓబవ్వను కత్తితో పొడిచాడు. వెంటనే వెనక్కి తిరిగిన ఓబవ్వ రుద్రకాళిలా అతన్ని కూడా సంహరించింది. కానీ ఆమెకు గాయం బలంగా తగిలింది. దాన్నుండి ఓబవ్వ ఇక కోలుకోలేకపోయింది. రాజ్య సంరక్షణలో ఆమె అసువులు బాసింది.
ఓబవ్వ ఆనాటినుండి ఓనకే ఓబవ్వ (రోకలిబండ ఓబవ్వ) అయింది. కన్నడ మహిళల స్థిర చిత్తానికీ, దేశభక్తికీ, ధైర్య సాహసాలకూ ప్రతీకగా నిలిచింది.
చిత్రదుర్గలోని క్రీడాప్రాంగణానికి "ఓనకే ఓబవ్వ క్రీడా ప్రాంగణం" అని పేరు.

Onake Obavva – The Brave Woman Who Saved a Kingdom
Long ago, in the 18th century, there lived a brave woman
named Obavva in Chitradurga, a place in present-day Karnataka.
Even today, people of Karnataka remember her with pride.
Her name stands for courage, strength, and love for the motherland.
The Kingdom in Danger
At that time, Chitradurga was ruled by King Madakari
Nayaka.
The kingdom was always under threat from Hyder Ali of Mysore, who tried
many times to capture the fort.
So the king made strong security arrangements.
Obavva’s husband was a guard at the fort tower.
His duty was simple but very important —
if he saw enemies, he had to blow a conch shell to alert the soldiers.

After serving food, Obavva went to fetch water.
But when she reached near the pond, she saw something frightening.
Behind the fort wall, there was a small hole.
Through that hole, an enemy soldier was secretly entering the fort.
Behind him, many more soldiers were waiting.
The kingdom was in great danger.

A Woman Takes Charge
Obavva dropped her water pot and ran home to warn her
husband.
But he was still eating.
She didn’t want to disturb him.
So she made a bold decision.
Without wasting a second, Obavva picked up a heavy wooden
pestle, called an “Onake”, and ran back to the fort wall.
Just then, another enemy soldier entered through the hole.
Obavva struck him hard on the head with the Onake.
He fell down instantly.
One by one, as enemy soldiers entered, Obavva knocked
them down, pulling them aside quietly.
She stood there like a lioness, fearless and strong.

The Alarm Is Raised
After finishing his meal, Obavva’s husband went looking for her.
He reached the fort wall and was shocked.
He saw Obavva standing there,
and many enemy soldiers lying dead behind her.
Obavva quickly told him to blow the conch shell.
As soon as he did, soldiers rushed in and chased away the remaining enemies.
A Hero’s Sacrifice
Sadly, one enemy soldier attacked Obavva from behind and stabbed her.
Even then, she turned around and killed him.
But her injury was deep.
Obavva could not survive.
She gave her life protecting her kingdom.
