ఒక అడవిలో పులుల కుటుంబం ఒకటి ఉండేది. ఆ కుటుంబసభ్యులు ముగ్గురు: `తండ్రి పులి, తల్లి పులి, పిల్ల పులి'. ఒక సారి తండ్రి పులి ఒక మంచి వేటను ఇంటికి తీసుకొచ్చి తల్లిపులి చేతికిస్తూ, "బాగా బలిసిన ఈ అడవి దున్న మాంసాన్ని మనం వండి తిందాం. మన చంటోడికి అది బాగా నచ్చుతుందనుకుంటున్నాను నేను. దీన్ని చక్కగా వండిపెట్ట"మని చెప్పింది.

తల్లి పులి సరేనని ఆ మాంసం వండింది. అడవంతా వాసనలు ఘుమఘుమలాడాయి. వండిన కూరను మూడు వేరు వేరు పాత్రల్లోకి వడ్డించింది తల్లి పులి. 

కానీ ఆ కూర ఇంకా చాలా వేడిగా ఉంది. "దీన్ని తినడానికి వీలవ్వటం లేదమ్మా- చాలా వేడిగా ఉంది! కాసేపాగి తింటే బాగుంటుంది" -అన్నది పిల్ల పులి."సరే. ఆలోపల మనం అడవిలో అలా తిరిగొద్దాం పదండి" అని తండ్రిపులి వాటిని అడవిలోకి తీసుకెళ్లింది.

ఇంతలో పిల్లుల కుటుంబం ఒకటి, పులుల గుహ వైపుకు వెళ్ళింది. పిల్లుల కుటుంబం కూడా ముగ్గురు సభ్యులదే: ’తండ్రిపిల్లీ, తల్లిపిల్లీ, పిల్లపిల్లి’!

అటు పోయే సరికి, గుహ పరిసరాల్లో అంతా ఒకటే సువాసన! పిల్లుల నోర్లు ఊటబావులయ్యాయి. వెంటనే అవి మూడూ తోకలూపుకుంటూ గుహలోకి పరుగెత్తాయి; అందులో ఉన్న పెద్ద పెద్ద పాత్రల పైకి ఎక్కి, కూరను ఆబగా తినసాగాయి. ’ఎంత రుచిగా ఉందో!’ అని మెక్కింది పిల్లపిల్లి.

 ’భలే కమ్మగా వండారు, కదూ? ఇదిగో బిడ్డా, ఇంకొంచెం తిను’ అని అందించింది తల్లిపిల్లి. ’చప్పుడు చేయకుండా తినండి మీరు. మనం ఎక్కడున్నామో గుర్తుందా? ఎవరైనా వస్తే ప్రమాదం! త్వరగా కానివ్వండి’ అన్నది తండ్రిపిల్లి. అన్నీ కడుపునిండా మాంసం తిని, భుక్తాయాసంతో అక్కడే పడుకున్నాయి కొంచెంసేపు.

అంతలోనే పులులు గుహద్వారం వరకూ వచ్చేశాయి! వాటిని చూడగానే పిల్లులు మూడూ ఒక్క ఉదుటున దూకి పరుగెత్తి, రాళ్ల మాటున నక్కి కూర్చున్నాయి: "అయ్యో! ముందూ వెనకా ఆలోచించకుండా లోపలికొచ్చాశామే! పైగా పులులు వండుకున్న మాంసాన్ని కడుపునిండా తినేశాం. ఇక అవి మనల్ని కనుక్కోవడం ఖాయం. ఈ రోజుతో మనకు మాంసం చెల్లినట్లే!" అన్నది తల్లిపిల్లి బాధగా.

"అమ్మా! ఆ పులులు మనవైపుకే వస్తున్నట్లు లేదూ?!" అన్నది పిల్లపిల్లి, భయపడుతూ.

"మీరేం భయపడకండి. కాసేపు చప్పుడు చేయకుండా ఉండండి." అన్నది తండ్రిపిల్లి బింకంగా.

అప్పటికే బాగా ఆకలిగొన్న పులులు మూడూ నేరుగా పాత్రల దగ్గరికే పోయాయి. 

పిల్లులు ఎంత తిన్నా గుండిగలోని మాంసం అస్సలు తరగలేదు.. అవి ఏమాత్రం తినగలవు కనక? ఇక ఆ మిగిలిన మాంసాన్నే పులులు కడుపునిండా తిన్నాయి. కడుపు నిండగానే వాటికి నిద్ర ముంచుకొచ్చింది. త్వరలో అవి నిద్రలోకి జారుకున్నాయి. పిల్లులు మూడూ ’బ్రతుకు జీవుడా’ అని అక్కడి నుండి జారుకుని, బయటపడ్డాయి.

ఇక దైర్యంగా ముందు నడిచింది తండ్రి పిల్లి.

"ఈ పులులు ఒట్టి దద్దమ్మల్లా ఉన్నాయి.. మనం తిన్న సంగతి అవి కనుక్కోలేకపోయాయి కదమ్మా?" అన్నది పిల్లపిల్లి మురిసిపోతూ.

"నిజమే మరి! మనం ఎంత మాంసం తిన్నామో కదా? అయినా అవి ఏ మాత్రం కనుక్కోలేకపోయాయి, చూడు!" అన్నది తల్లి పిల్లి మురిపెంగా.

"అదేం కాదు. మనం తిన్న తరువాత ఆ సంగతి వాటికి తెలీకుండా ఎలా పోతుంది? ఖచ్చితంగా తెలిసే ఉంటుంది, వాటికి. అయినా అవి అర్ధం కానట్లు నటించాయంతే. ఎందుకంటే, నిజానికి వాటికి మనం అంటే చాలా భయం! చూడండి- నిద్రపోతున్నట్లు ఎలా నటిస్తున్నాయో ఇప్పుడు?! అన్నది తండ్రి పిల్లి గర్వంగా ముఖం పెట్టి, పెద్దమనిషి మాదిరి!

Pilli Dhairyam – The Brave Cat

Once upon a time, in a forest, there lived a tiger family: a father tiger, a mother tiger, and a little tiger cub. One day, the father tiger brought home a freshly hunted piece of meat. He handed it to the mother tiger and said,
"Cook this meat well. Our little one will love it!"

The mother tiger cooked the meat and divided it into three bowls. However, the meat was still too hot for the cub to eat. So the father tiger suggested,
"Let’s take the meat to the forest for a while so it cools down."

Meanwhile, a family of three cats – a father cat, a mother cat, and a little cat – came near the tiger’s den. The smell of the cooked meat reached them, and their mouths watered. They quickly ran into the den and ate the meat from the big bowls.

"It’s so delicious!" exclaimed the little cat.

After eating their fill, the cats realized that the tigers were approaching! Terrified, they hid quietly. The father cat, however, stayed calm and whispered,
"Don’t be afraid. Stay silent, and we will be safe."

The tigers arrived and, thinking the meat was untouched, ate the remaining portion. Once the tigers were full and asleep, the brave cats quietly sneaked out of the den and escaped safely.

The father cat led the way courageously, and the little cat proudly said,
"We ate so much, yet the tigers never realized it!"

The mother cat agreed,
"Yes! Even though they were so close, our courage and cleverness saved us."
