అనగా అనగా ఓవూళ్ళో రామూ, సోమూ అని యిద్దరు స్నేహితులుండేవాళ్లు. ఒక రోజున వాళ్లిద్దరూ ఒక దూర ప్రయాణానికి బయలుదేరారు, ఆరోజుల్లో యిప్పటిలాగా బళ్లు, కార్లు, రైళ్ళూ లేవుగా? అందుచేత యిద్దరూ కాలినడకని బయలుదేరారు.
త్రోవలో తిందామని రామూ మూడు రొట్టెలు, సోమూ అయిదు రొట్టెలు తెచ్చుకున్నారు.
సగందూరం వచ్చేసరికి వాళ్లిద్దరికీ ఆకలివేసింది. ఆ ప్రక్కనే ఒక చెరువు కనిపించింది. ఇద్దరూ చెరువు ఒడ్డున రొట్టెలు తిందామని కూచున్నారు. ఇంతలో ఒక బాటసారి అటుపోతూ, వాళ్లదగ్గిరికి వచ్చి "బాబూ, ఆకలి జాస్తిగావుంది. నాకు కూడా కాస్త పెడతారా?" అని అడిగాడు.
బాటసారిని చూసేసరికి యిద్దరికీ జాలి కలిగింది. వాళ్ళ దగ్గరున్న ఎనిమిదిరొట్టెలూ ముగ్గురూ సమంగా పంచుకు తిన్నారు.
బాటసారి వాళ్లిద్దరికి కలిపి ఎనిమిది అణాలుయిచ్చి తనదారిన వెళ్లిపోయాడు.
అప్పుడు సోమూ అన్నాడు. "రామూ, నావి అయిదురొట్టెలు గనక నేను అయిదు అణాలు తీసుకుంటాను. నీవి మూడు రొట్టెలుగనక మూడుఅణాలు తీసుకో" అని.
రామూ ఒప్పుకోలేదు-"ఆదేం కుదరదు. ఇద్దరం చెరిసగం పంచుకోవాలి.” అన్నాడు.
ఇందుకు సోమూ ఒప్పుకోలేదు. అందు వల్ల యిద్దరూ తగువులాడసాగారు.
ఇంతలో ఆ దారిన ఒక ముసలివాడు పోతూ వాళ్లపోట్లాట చూచి దగ్గిరికివచ్చాడు. రామూ, సోమూ తమపోట్లాటకి కారణ మేమిటో చెప్పారు.
అప్పుడు ముసలివాడు "మీరు నే చెప్పినట్లు చేస్తారా? న్యాయంగా పంచుతాను” అని అడిగాడు. రామూసోమూ ఒప్పుకున్నారు.
ముసలివాడు అడిగాడు - "ఎనిమిది రొట్టెలూ ముగ్గురూ సమంగా తిన్నారు. గదా?” అని. "అవు”నన్నారు వాళ్లిద్దరూ.
“అయితే, సోమూతెచ్చిన ఐదు రొట్టెలు పదిహేను ముక్కలు అయాయి. రామూ తెచ్చిన మూడురొట్టెలు తొమిది ముక్కలు అయినాయి. సోమూ తన పదిహేను ముక్కలలో తను ఎనిమిది తిని బాటసారికి ఏడు ముక్కలు యిచ్చాడన్న మాట.
అందుకని సోమూకు ఏడు అణాలు వస్తయ్. రామూ తన తొమ్మిదిముక్కల్లో తను ఎనిమిది తిని ఒక ముక్క బాటసారి కిచ్చాడన్నమాట. అందుకని రామూకి ఒక అణా వస్తుంది” అని ముసలివాడు తీర్పు చెప్పాడు.
ఆ తీర్పువిని రామూ తన తెలివి తక్కువకు సిగ్గుపడ్డాడు. "చెరిసగం పంచుకుంటేనే బాగుండేదే!" అని విచారించాడు.
