అనగా అనగా ఒక రాజ్యం ఉండేది. ఆ రాజ్యం పేరు విశాల రాజ్యం. ఆరాజ్యానికి రాజు విశాలుడు. పేరుకు తగ్గట్లుగా ఆ రాజు హృదయం విశాలమైనది. రాజు రాజ్యాన్ని బాగా పరిపాలించేవాడు. ప్రజలను కన్నబిడ్డల్లాగా చూసుకునేవాడు. అందుకు తగిన విధంగానే ప్రజలు కూడా ఆయన పట్ల వినయ విధేతలు కలిగి ఉండేవాళ్లు. కష్టపడి పని చేసేవాళ్ళు.

రైతులందరితో పాటు రాజు కూడా వ్యవసాయం చేసేవాడు. మంచి మంచి పంటలు పండించేవాడు. రైతులందరికి పంటలు పండించడంలో మెళుకువలు చెప్పి, మంచి నాణ్యమైన పంటలు పండించేట్లు చూసేవాడు విశాలుడు.

తను రాజునన్న గర్వం ఏనాడూ ఉండేది కాదు ఆయనకు. ఇతర రాజ్యాలలో వున్న వ్యాపారస్తులంతా నాణ్యమైన సరుకు కోసం విశాల రాజ్యానికి వచ్చేవారు. అందువల్లకూడా, విశాలరాజ్యంలోని రైతులకు మంచి లాభాలు వచ్చేవి. ఆ ఉత్సాహంతో రైతులు ఇంకా నాణ్యమైన పంటలను పండించేవారు. ఆ విధంగా ఆ రాజ్యం నాణ్యమైన సరకులకు పెట్టిన పేరైంది.

కొన్నిసంవత్సరాల తరువాత ఆ రాజు ఆ రాజ్యంలోని రైతులందరినీ సమావేశపరిచి, "నేను కొన్ని రోజులు విశ్రాంతి తీసుకోవాలని నిర్ణయించుకున్నాను. 

రాజ్యం వదలి అడవులకు వెళ్ళి తపస్సు చేసుకుంటాను. ఈ రోజు సుదినం. సాయంత్రంగానే నేను ప్రయాణమై పోతాను. ఇన్నేళ్ళుగా మీరు తెలుసుకున్న మెళకువలతో మంచి మంచి పంటలు పండిస్తూ పోండి. మన రాజ్య కీర్తి ప్రతిష్టలను ఇంకా ఇనుమడింప జేయండి " అని ముగించాడు.

రైతులందరూ చాలా బాధపడ్డారు. రాజు మాటలకు ఎదురు చెప్పలేరాయె! విచారంగా ముఖాలు వేళ్ళాడ వేసుకొని ఇళ్ళకు చేరుకున్నారు. ఆ రోజు సాయంత్రం రాజుగారు అడవులకు వెళ్ళిపోతూ ఉంటే ఆ రాజ్యం లోని ప్రజలందరూ బాధపడి, ఏడుస్తూ చూస్తుండి పోయారు. 

అటు తరువాత కూడా ఆ రైతులు రాజుగారిచ్చిన విలువైన సలహాలను పాటిస్తూ మంచి నాణ్యమైన పంటలు పండించారు. గొప్ప లాభాలు పొందారు; ధనవంతులయ్యారు.

నిదానంగా వాళ్లంతా మంచి భవనాలు కట్టించుకుని విలాసవంతమైన జీవితానికి అలవాటు పడిపోయారు. రాజును పూర్తిగా మరచిపోయారు. పంటలు పండించడం మానుకున్నారు.

కొంత కాలానికి వారు పూర్తిగా సోమరులుగా తయారయ్యారు. వాళ్ళ దగ్గరున్న డబ్బులు మంచులాగా కరిగిపోతూ వచ్చాయి. వాళ్ళు ఇష్టపడి కట్టించుకున్న ఇండ్లు సైతం అమ్ముకోవలసి వచ్చింది. అయినా వాటిని కొనేవాళ్ళు కూడా లేరు! ధనవంతులు బికారులయ్యారు. 

ఆ రాజ్యంలో అంతటా కరువు తాండవం ఆడసాగింది. ప్రజలు ఆకలితో మాడుతున్నారు. అప్పుడు వాళ్లకు రాజుగారు గుర్తుకు వచ్చారు. అయినా ఏం లాభం? ఏమీ ప్రయోజనం లేకపోయింది.

రైతులు సోమరులుగా మారడంతో పంటలు పండించలేకపోయారు. వర్షాలు కూడా సరిగా పడటం లేదు. కొంత కాలానికి రాజుగారు రాజ్యానికి తిరిగి వచ్చారు. రాజ్య స్థితిగతులను చూసారు. అక్కడ ఒక క్షణం కూడా ఉండలేక, తిరిగి అడవులకు వెళ్ళిపోయారు.

'విశాల హృదయాలు లేని విశాల రాజ్యం నాకెందుకు?' అని రాజుగారికి అనిపించి ఉంటుంది.

A Vast Heart – A Vast Kingdom

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom called Vishala Rajyam—the “Vast Kingdom.” Its king was named Vishala, and true to his name, he had a heart as vast as the skies. The king ruled his kingdom wisely and lovingly. He treated his people like precious children, and in return, the citizens respected him deeply and worked diligently.

Not only did the farmers toil in the fields, but the king himself joined them in cultivation. He grew bountiful crops and guided the farmers to produce the best quality harvests. Every farmer thrived under his careful advice, and the kingdom became famous far and wide for its superior produce.

 

Merchants from distant lands came to Vishala Rajyam seeking the finest goods, which brought prosperity to the farmers. This mutual care and effort created a cycle of excellence—the kingdom’s reputation was unmatched.

Years passed, and one day the king called all the farmers together. “I have decided to take a short break,” he announced. “I will leave the kingdom and spend some time in the forest, in meditation. Today is the day of my journey. Until I return, continue your work with the same dedication you have always shown. Keep our kingdom’s reputation shining bright.”

The farmers were heartbroken. How could they argue with the king? With heavy hearts, they returned home. That evening, as the king departed for the forest, the entire kingdom watched him leave, many in tears.

At first, the farmers continued to follow the king’s guidance. They sowed excellent crops, reaped great profits, and became wealthy. Over time, they built beautiful homes and got accustomed to a life of luxury. Slowly, they forgot the king’s lessons. They stopped tending the fields as carefully as before.

Seasons passed, and laziness took over. The wealth they had accumulated began to dwindle. Even the grand homes they had built had to be sold, but no buyers were left. The kingdom fell into hardship and famine, and the people suffered from hunger.

Only then did they remember their king. But what good was it now? Their fields lay barren, the rains were unreliable, and their prosperity had vanished. When the king eventually returned to the kingdom, he saw the state of things and realized—without a vast heart in the people, even a vast kingdom cannot thrive. He left again for the forest, saddened by the lesson the kingdom had forgotten.

And so the king reflected:
"Why should I have a vast kingdom, if there are no vast hearts within it?"
