Aham Bavam – A Story in Telugu
The tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, was sitting
quietly on a large rock by the riverbank. A small river flowed swiftly from the
distant forests of Punjab. Behind him stretched the Shivalik hills, and beyond
those, the higher peaks of the Himalayas tried to hide themselves. Yet, no
matter how much the mountains tried, they could not stop the sun’s rays from
glimmering on the snow-capped Himalayan peaks.
The Guru was reading the Guru Granth Sahib silently.
At such times, no one disturbed him. Every day, he dedicated part of his time
to reading the scriptures and reflecting on the self. Afterward, his group of
disciples would spend some time observing right and wrong in themselves.
On this particular day, a visitor approached, bowed
respectfully, and sat near the Guru. Guru Gobind Singh looked up and recognized
him. It was Raghunath, a wealthy householder from a nearby village and a
supporter of the Sikh community. He had come to contribute his wealth in
support of the Guru’s declared mission against injustice. Everyone sat in
silence; words were unnecessary.
After a while, Raghunath took a small packet out of his
pocket. It was wrapped carefully in cloth. He opened it gently to reveal two
glittering gold bangles, studded with precious diamonds—extremely valuable,
worth several lakh gold coins.

Raghunath spoke humbly, “Guruji, please accept this small
offering from a humble servant. Even the greatest deeds you perform cannot
match its value. Yet, please accept it and bless me.”
His words were full of humility, yet his heart brimmed with
pride and expectation. Guru Gobind Singh’s eyes looked deep into Raghunath’s
heart. Nothing could hide from his keen gaze.
Raghunath carefully handed one of the bangles to the Guru.
The Guru, wishing to appreciate its beauty and craftsmanship, took it
gently, as if receiving an ordinary item. He placed his fingers around it and
began to spin it. To everyone’s shock, the bangle slipped, fell onto the
rocks, tumbled into the river, and disappeared instantly into the flowing water.
Raghunath’s face turned pale. He immediately jumped up,
rushing to the river like an arrow, trying desperately to retrieve the gold
bangle. Meanwhile, the Guru resumed reading the Granth Sahib in serene silence.
An hour later, Raghunath returned, drenched and exhausted,
his body dripping from head to toe. Approaching the Guru, he said, “I searched
the river everywhere, Guruji, but I could not find the gold bangle. If you tell
me exactly where it fell, I will go down again and see if I can retrieve it.”
Guru Gobind Singh looked into his face, understanding the anxiety
and attachment in his disciple’s heart. Then he took the second bangle and slowly
let it slip into the river, saying calmly, “There… that’s where it fell.”
The proud disciple’s attachment, along with both the gold
bangles, was washed away by the river. The Guru was never concerned
about the gold itself, but about the state of the heart.
The lesson was clear: It is not the material wealth that
matters, but the ego and attachment in one’s heart.
